CHAPTER 55
For several days, Renzo hasn’t answered any of my calls or messages. The silence is deafening, and it’s affecting my ability to focus on work. I’m haunted by whether he’s still angry with me, or if he’s decided that he no longer cares. I know I was wrong for keeping secrets from him, but...
Furthermore, I sigh deeply, staring at the screen in front of me without really seeing it. My mind keeps drifting back to the last conversation we had, the look of hurt and betrayal in his eyes. I understand why he’s upset, but the silence feels unbearable. The weight of my actions is crushing me, and I’m struggling to figure out how to make things right.
The surrounding office is bustling with activity, but I feel isolated in my own turmoil. Every beep of a message alert or passing conversation only serves as a reminder of my own personal crisis. I’m so consumed by worry that I’m making careless mistakes in my work, which only adds to my anxiety.
I know I need to reach out to him, to find a way to explain my side and hopefully rebuild the trust we had. But every time I think about trying again, I’m struck by fear—fear that he’s moved on, that he’s made up his mind, and that there’s nothing I can do to change things.
A knock on my office door jolts me from my thoughts. I look up to see one of my colleagues, Janet, peeking in. “Sam, are you okay? You seem off lately. Is everything alright?”
I manage a weak smile, trying to mask the turmoil within. “I’m fine, Janet. Just... dealing with some personal stuff. Nothing to worry about.”
Janet nods, though she looks unconvinced. “If you need to talk, I’m here. Sometimes sharing helps.”
I appreciate the offer, but I’m not ready to open up about the mess I’ve made with Renzo. “Thanks, Janet. I’ll keep that in mind.”
As Janet leaves, I feel a renewed surge of determination. I need to take control of the situation and face the consequences of my actions. Avoiding Renzo won’t solve anything. I need to be honest with him, explain my side of the story, and see if there’s a chance to make things right.
With a deep breath, I pull out my phone and start drafting a message. I want to reach out one last time, to let him know that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to fix things. I hope that even if he’s still angry, he’ll see that I’m sincere and willing to make amends.
I hit send and watch as the message disappears into the void. Now, all I can do is wait and hope that this time, he’ll be willing to listen.
I finished my paperwork and decided to step outside for some fresh air. My colleagues Rhea and a few others invited me to lunch, but I declined, saying I needed some time alone. I needed to clear my head and figure out how to handle everything that’s been happening with Renzo.
As I walked down the street, lost in thought, I heard someone call my name. I stopped in my tracks, looking around, and saw Dante approaching with a cup of coffee in hand.
“Dante?” I said, my voice tinged with surprise.
He smiled, the warmth of his expression a stark contrast to the storm inside me. “Hey, Sam. What are you doing here? Aren’t you on your lunch break?”
I shook my head. “No, I decided to skip lunch. Just needed some time to think.”
Dante nodded, handing me the coffee. “I thought you might need this. It’s from that new café around the corner. I remember you mentioned you liked their coffee.”
I took the cup gratefully, the warmth of the coffee seeping through the paper and into my hands. “Oh, okay,” I replied, trying to muster a smile.
We began walking together, the silence between us settling comfortably yet weighed down by unspoken words. Dante's presence was a small solace, and he seemed to sense that I needed more than just a casual chat.
“How’s everything going?” he asked gently. “You seem a bit off lately. Is it Renzo?”
The question caught me off guard. I hadn’t expected Dante to zero in so quickly, but his perceptiveness was both comforting and unsettling. I took a sip of the coffee, letting the familiar taste help ground me before I spoke.
Dante's question caught me off guard, and I glanced at him, unsure of how to answer. His perceptiveness was both comforting and unsettling. I took a sip of the coffee, letting the familiar taste ground me before I spoke.
“Surely, you know my true self by now?” I asked, trying to gauge his reaction.
Dante looked at me with a mix of curiosity and concern. “I have an idea, but I’d like to hear it from you.”
I sighed, feeling the weight of the past few days pressing down on me. “Renzo and I... we’ve been through a lot lately. There are things about my past and my family that he doesn’t fully understand, and it’s causing a rift between us.”
Dante nodded, listening intently. “It sounds like there’s a lot of unresolved tension. Is there something specific that’s making things difficult?”
I hesitated, grappling with the best way to articulate the turmoil inside me. “I kept some major secrets from him, things I thought were better left unsaid. But now, those secrets are coming to light, and it’s causing a lot of pain. I didn’t mean to hurt him, but it feels like I’m losing him because of it.”
Dante’s expression softened, and he offered a reassuring smile. “You love Renzo very much, don’t you?”
His question caught me off guard, and I looked away, unable to meet his gaze. “Yes, I do,” I admitted quietly. “I love him more than I can put into words. But my past and the things I’ve hidden are making it impossible for us to move forward.”
Dante’s eyes were full of understanding as he nodded. “Love can be complicated, especially when there are deep-seated issues and secrets involved. But if you truly care for him, you’ll find a way to work through it together.”
I took a deep breath, feeling a mix of hope and anxiety. “I want to, but I don’t know if he’s willing to listen or if he’ll ever trust me again.”
Dante looked at me with a mixture of understanding and concern. “Renzo is very overprotective, especially when he loves someone. He’s a friend of mine since we were kids. I admit I envy him a bit because he seems to get what he wants,” he said, glancing at me with a hint of something I couldn’t quite place. “Just like you.”
His words made me pause, and I met his gaze, sensing an unspoken depth in his eyes. It made me uncomfortable, and I quickly looked away.
“Ahm, I mean, I can see how much Renzo loves you, so I think he might forgive you,” Dante added, his voice softer now.
I nodded, trying to process his words and the undertone of his earlier comment. It was clear that Dante had his own feelings about the situation, but right now, I needed to focus on what I could do to mend things with Renzo.
“Thanks, Dante,” I said, forcing a small smile. “I appreciate your support and advice. I’ll do my best to fix things with Renzo.”
Dante nodded, his expression shifting to one of encouragement. “I’m sure you’ll find a way. Just remember, honesty and effort go a long way.”
As I walked back to the office, I reflected on Dante’s words and the weight of the decisions ahead of me. My heart was heavy with the knowledge that repairing my relationship with Renzo would be challenging, but I felt a renewed determination to face it head-on.
The lingering confusion about Dante’s unspoken feelings would have to wait. For now, I needed to focus on confronting the pain I had caused and working towards rebuilding trust with Renzo.Download Novelah App
