Chapter 145: Surviving the Avalanche

“Survival isn’t just about running faster than the danger—it’s about finding a way through, even when every path seems blocked.”
The rumble of the avalanche roared through the mountains like a beast waking from a long slumber, shaking the very ground beneath their feet. Aria’s heart pounded as she felt the vibrations racing up her legs, each one stronger than the last. Snow poured down from above, a blinding white wave that threatened to swallow everything in its path. Beside her, Mario’s face was tight with focus, his eyes darting between their surroundings and the deadly surge of snow crashing down toward them.
“Aria, use the compass!” Mario shouted, his voice barely audible over the deafening noise. “It’s our only chance!”
Aria fumbled with the compass, her frozen fingers struggling to find the grip. The light within it pulsed erratically, flickering like a dying star. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus, to push aside the panic clawing at her chest. With a desperate prayer, she held the compass up, willing it to guide them to safety.
The compass’s light flared suddenly, pointing sharply to the left. Aria’s eyes widened as she saw a narrow path veering away from the avalanche’s direct path—barely more than a gap between two towering rocks.
“This way! Follow me!” she yelled, grabbing Mario’s arm and pulling him toward the narrow opening.
The snowstorm whipped around them, blurring the edges of the world into a dizzying swirl of white. Aria could barely see a few feet ahead, the wind tearing at her cloak and throwing icy shards into her face. But the compass’s light held steady, guiding her toward the path with a determination that matched her own.
Mario pushed ahead, his breaths coming in sharp gasps, while behind them, the roar of the avalanche grew louder. Aria risked a glance back, her stomach dropping as she saw the snow crashing down in a relentless wave, a force of nature that cared nothing for the lives caught in its path.
Lia and Liam struggled to keep up, their faces pale with effort as they fought their way through the blinding storm. Lia stumbled, her foot catching on a hidden rock, but Liam was there in an instant, pulling her back to her feet.
“Come on, we’re almost there!” Liam shouted, his voice filled with a determination that Aria couldn’t help but admire.
They surged forward, the wind and snow battering them with every step. Aria felt her muscles burn, her lungs screaming for air, but she kept her focus on the light of the compass. She couldn’t afford to slow down—not when survival was just a few feet ahead.
But the avalanche had no intention of letting them go so easily. Just as Aria and Mario reached the narrow gap, a massive wall of snow slammed into the mountainside, sending a shockwave through the ground. Aria lost her footing, her legs slipping out from under her as the world spun in a blur of white and shadow.
“Aria!” Mario’s voice echoed in her ears, and she reached out blindly, her hand brushing against his for a brief, desperate moment before the snow tore them apart.
The avalanche surged between them like a living thing, a wave of snow and ice that split the group in two. Aria felt herself tumbling, her world turning upside down as she slid down the slope, her fingers clawing at the snow to slow her descent. She caught a glimpse of Mario’s stricken face, his mouth open in a wordless shout, before he disappeared behind the blinding curtain of snow.
She landed hard against a rocky ledge, the impact driving the air from her lungs. For a moment, everything went dark, the storm’s roar fading into a distant hum. But then she heard a voice—familiar and urgent—calling her name through the darkness.
“Aria! Hold on!”
She forced her eyes open, blinking against the snow that clung to her lashes. Liam was crouched beside her, his face pale but determined, his hand gripping hers like a lifeline.
“Liam... Mario and Lia—” Her voice broke, panic rising in her chest.
“We’ll find them,” Liam said, his voice steadier than she felt. “But we have to keep moving. Come on, get up.”
They clambered to their feet, the ledge barely wide enough to stand on as the snow raged past them. Liam’s jaw was set, his eyes dark with a resolve that matched the storm. He looked out over the sea of white, where Mario and Lia had vanished, and Aria saw the pain in his expression—saw how much he wanted to run back into the blizzard, to fight his way through the snow until he found the ones they’d lost.
But he didn’t. He tightened his grip on Aria’s hand, forcing himself to stay focused. “I promise you, Aria,” he said, his voice low and fierce. “I’ll find them. I don’t care what it takes—I’ll find a way to bring them back.”
Aria’s chest tightened at the raw determination in his words. She could see the fear in his eyes, the same fear that gnawed at her own heart. But she also saw the strength behind it, the unwavering belief that they could make it through this—if they held on.
She nodded, fighting back the tears that burned behind her eyes. “Then let’s survive this, Liam. For them.”
As they clung to the narrow ledge, the compass in Aria’s hand began to glow brighter, cutting through the swirling snow with a fierce, golden light. It pulsed like a heartbeat, steady and strong, as if urging her to trust in its guidance. Aria stared at the light, the warmth spreading through her fingers, and for the first time, she felt a sense of clarity—felt the compass’s magic resonating deep within her.
“It’s showing us the way,” she realized, her voice barely audible over the storm. “It’s telling us where to go.”
Liam looked at her, his expression conflicted. “But what if it’s leading us away from them? What if following it means leaving them behind?”
Aria shook her head, her grip tightening on the compass. “We have to trust it, Liam. If there’s any chance of finding Mario and Lia again, it’s by following the path the compass shows us. It’s never led us wrong before.”
Liam hesitated, the doubt clear in his eyes. But then he nodded, the tension easing from his shoulders as he let out a shaky breath. “Okay. I trust you, Aria. Lead the way.”
The storm howled around them, the snow swirling in a chaotic dance that obscured everything beyond the ledge. But the compass’s glow cut through the darkness, guiding them down a narrow, icy path that twisted deeper into the mountain’s shadowy heart. Aria and Liam moved quickly, their steps careful but urgent as they navigated the treacherous terrain. The snow was relentless, pushing against them like a living force, but Aria kept her focus on the light, letting it lead them forward through the chaos.
“Do you think they’re okay?” Liam asked, his voice barely more than a whisper as they paused to catch their breath.
Aria’s heart clenched, but she forced herself to nod. “They have to be,” she said, more to convince herself than anything. “Mario’s strong, and Lia... she’s got more fight in her than we give her credit for. They’ll make it through this. And so will we.”
Liam’s expression softened, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “You always know how to keep hope alive, Aria. Even when things seem impossible.”
Just as they found their rhythm, the compass’s glow shifted, its light brightening until it was nearly blinding. The air around them crackled with energy, and Aria felt the ground tremble beneath their feet as if the mountain itself was reacting to the magic.
“What now?” Liam asked, squinting against the light.
Aria held up the compass, her heart pounding as she saw where it was pointing—deeper into the mountain, toward a place where no map could guide them. The air grew colder, the shadows lengthening around them as the storm’s fury intensified.
“This is it,” Aria whispered, her voice filled with a mixture of fear and determination. “The compass wants us to go deeper... into the unknown.”
Liam nodded, his expression hardening with resolve. “Then that’s where we’ll go. Whatever’s waiting for us... we’ll face it together.”
