Chapter 136: Ruins of the Forgotten Civilization

“What if we were never meant to find this?” Aria whispered, her voice carrying a strange mix of awe and fear as she stood before the crumbling remains of a civilization long lost to time.
Liam stepped beside her, his hand brushing lightly against her arm. “But we did.” His voice was quiet but firm, as if grounding both of them in the present.
The ruins stretched before them, overgrown with thick moss and tangled vines. Ancient pillars, half-sunken into the ground, bore intricate carvings, their details worn down by centuries of wind and rain. Broken statues lay scattered across the clearing, their cracked stone faces frozen in expressions of reverence. And at the heart of it all, a weathered mural glinted beneath a thin layer of dirt and leaves.
Aria ran her fingers across the carvings, her pulse quickening. Each figure seemed to be bowing toward a familiar object—a compass resting atop a pedestal, radiating rays of light.
Her breath hitched. “It’s the same symbol… the same compass.”
Liam knelt beside her, brushing away the debris from the mural. “This place—these people—they must’ve worshiped it.”
Aria’s heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing. The compass, the ancient civilization, the pedestal—it all felt far bigger than anything she had imagined. For the first time since their journey began, a question gnawed at her, cutting deep into her confidence: What if this wasn’t meant for me?
Aria stood frozen before the mural, her hands trembling slightly as she traced the lines etched into the stone. The carvings showed figures gathered in awe around the compass, as though it were a divine artifact. There was reverence in their faces, etched forever in stone—a silent prayer to something far beyond their understanding.
The longer Aria looked, the more the weight of her doubts pressed down on her. What if she had been wrong? What if the compass wasn’t hers to wield?
She took a step back, struggling to catch her breath. “What if this was never my journey to take?” The words spilled from her lips before she could stop them. “What if I’m just an outsider trying to steal what belongs to someone else?”
Liam rose to his feet, dusting off his hands. “You’re not stealing anything, Aria.” He stepped closer, his gaze steady. “The compass chose you. It’s been guiding you all this time—for a reason.”
Aria shook her head, frustration bubbling to the surface. “But what if that reason isn’t what I thought it was? What if I’m just chasing something I was never meant to have?”
Liam reached out, gently placing his hand over hers. “You’ve earned your place here, Aria. Every step you’ve taken, every challenge you’ve faced—it’s led you to this moment.”
His voice softened, the sincerity in his words tugging at the corners of her heart. “You belong here. And whatever this compass is meant to unlock, you’re the one who’s supposed to find it.”
Aria blinked back the tears threatening to well in her eyes. “What if I fail?” she whispered.
Liam gave her a small, reassuring smile. “Then we’ll figure it out.”
The warmth of Liam’s words lingered between them as they continued exploring the ruins, but the weight of uncertainty still clung to Aria’s heart. Each step she took felt heavier than the last, as if the ghosts of the past were watching her, judging her every move.
The forest had long claimed these ruins—vines snaked their way through broken walls, moss carpeted the stone floors, and roots twisted around pillars that once stood tall. But there was something else beneath the surface, something hidden. Aria could feel it, a faint hum of magic beneath her feet, pulling her deeper into the heart of the ruins.
They rounded a corner, and Liam stopped abruptly. “Look at this.” He pointed toward a section of the floor where the stones were arranged in an unusual pattern—spiraling inward like the petals of a blooming flower.
Aria knelt beside him, running her fingers along the edges of the stones. “This isn’t just a decorative design,” she murmured. “It’s hiding something.”
With careful precision, they began prying the stones loose, revealing a narrow shaft leading downward into the earth. The air that drifted up from below was cold, carrying the faint scent of ancient dust.
“There’s something down there,” Liam whispered, a flicker of excitement in his voice.
Aria’s pulse quickened. She handed the compass to Liam for safekeeping and began lowering herself into the shaft, using the vines as makeshift ropes.
The chamber below was cold and silent, untouched by time. As Aria’s feet touched the ground, a soft glow began to emanate from the walls—symbols etched into the stone pulsed faintly, reacting to her presence.
“What is this place?” Aria whispered, her voice echoing softly in the enclosed space.
Liam followed her down, landing lightly beside her. His gaze swept across the glowing walls, his brow furrowing in concentration. “These symbols... They look like a language, but not one I’ve seen before.”
As they ventured deeper into the chamber, the glow of the symbols grew brighter, illuminating a central pedestal. Resting atop it was a stone tablet, cracked down the middle but still legible. Aria brushed the dust away from the tablet’s surface, revealing intricate carvings that told a story—one of creation, destruction, and a compass capable of tipping the balance between the two.
Aria stared at the tablet, her heart pounding. “This compass... It wasn’t just a guide.” She looked up at Liam, her voice trembling. “It was meant to wield power—power to shape the world.”
Liam’s expression darkened. “And if that power falls into the wrong hands...”
Aria swallowed hard, the enormity of their discovery sinking in. “What if I’m not the right person for this, Liam? What if I make the wrong choice?”
Liam stepped closer, his gaze unwavering. “You won’t.” He placed a hand on her shoulder, grounding her. “You’ve made it this far by trusting yourself. Don’t stop now.”
As Aria traced the last line of the inscription, a faint click echoed through the chamber. The ground beneath them trembled, and the pedestal slowly began to lower into the floor, revealing a hidden compartment.
Inside, nestled among ancient scrolls and artifacts, was a map—ornate and detailed, marked with the same compass symbol they had seen throughout the ruins.
Aria picked it up, her heart racing. “It’s a map,” she whispered. “A map to the final resting place of the compass’s true power.”
Liam leaned over her shoulder, his eyes scanning the markings. “That’s… a mountain range. The same one the forest pointed us toward.”
The compass in Liam’s hand glowed brighter, pulsing in rhythm with the symbols on the walls. It was as if the ruins themselves were urging them forward, pushing them toward the final phase of their journey.
Aria looked at Liam, her heart heavy with both excitement and fear. “This is it,” she whispered. “This is what we’ve been searching for.”
