Chapter 166: Liam's Bravery and Loyalty

The ground continued to tremble as the creature emerged from the darkness, its form towering and shrouded in shadows, its eyes glowing with an ominous, ancient energy. The roar that filled the chamber sent shockwaves through the stone walls, making the air itself vibrate with tension. Dust fell from the ceiling, and cracks spidered along the floor as if the very foundation of the temple were beginning to give way.
"Liam!" Aria shouted over the deafening roar, her heart pounding in her chest. "We need to move!"
But Liam wasn’t moving. He stood his ground, his eyes locked on the massive creature as it took another step forward, the ground shaking beneath its weight. His jaw was set in grim determination, and though Aria could see the fear in his eyes, there was no hesitation.
"Liam!" Aria tried again, but this time her voice was filled with panic. The creature was coming closer, and every instinct in her body screamed at her to run.
Liam turned his head slightly, his gaze meeting hers for a brief second. "You go, Aria. I’ll hold it off."
Her heart sank. "What? No! You can’t—"
"I’m not leaving you behind," Liam said firmly, his voice steady despite the chaos around them. He unsheathed his sword, the blade gleaming in the dim light. "You’ve got the compass. You’re the key to all of this. I’ll distract it. Get out of here while you can!"
The very idea of leaving Liam behind made Aria’s stomach twist with fear and guilt. "I’m not going without you!" she yelled, her voice breaking with emotion. "We’re in this together!"
Liam shook his head, his gaze fierce. "Aria, listen to me. If you don’t go now, we’re both going to die here. You have to trust me."
Trust. That word struck Aria like a bolt of lightning. Liam had been by her side through every trial, every danger, every impossible situation they’d faced since the journey began. He had never wavered, never once let fear stop him from protecting her, from being the friend and ally she could always count on. His bravery and loyalty were undeniable, but now, as he stood before the looming creature, sword drawn, it was clear that he was willing to sacrifice himself for her.
Tears burned at the corners of Aria’s eyes as she shook her head, her heart torn between the need to protect him and the knowledge that he was right. If she didn’t go now, neither of them would make it out alive.
"Don’t make me do this," she whispered, her voice trembling.
Liam gave her a sad, yet resolute smile. "You’re stronger than you think, Aria. You’ll find a way through this, but I need you to live. That’s all I’m asking."
Before she could argue again, Liam turned to face the creature fully, his sword raised in defiance. The beast, now fully visible in the dim light, was massive—its body made of dark, swirling shadows and ancient stone, as if it had been carved from the very walls of the temple itself. Its eyes glowed with a cold, malevolent energy, and the air around it crackled with magic.
"Liam!" Aria screamed, but her voice was drowned out by the creature’s next thunderous roar.
In that moment, something inside Aria broke. Her fear, her doubt, her hesitation—it all shattered as the realization of Liam’s sacrifice hit her like a tidal wave. She couldn’t lose him. Not like this.
With a surge of adrenaline, Aria tightened her grip on the compass and stepped forward, refusing to leave him to face the creature alone. The magic inside her, the power of the elements she had learned to harness, pulsed through her veins, giving her strength and clarity.
"Liam!" she called out, her voice steady now, filled with determination. "We’re doing this together. I’m not leaving without you!"
Liam glanced over his shoulder, his expression a mixture of exasperation and relief. "Aria, you—"
"Enough!" she interrupted, stepping closer to him. "You’re not doing this alone. We’ll face it together. That’s what we’ve always done, and I’m not stopping now."
Liam’s mouth twitched into a small, lopsided grin. "You’re impossible, you know that?"
Aria smiled back, though her heart was still racing. "Yeah, well, someone’s got to keep you out of trouble."
The creature let out another earth-shattering roar, and Aria and Liam braced themselves as it charged toward them, its massive form barreling through the chamber like a force of nature. Dust and debris flew into the air as the ground cracked beneath the creature’s weight.
Liam moved first, his sword gleaming as he lunged forward to meet the creature head-on. His bravery in the face of such overwhelming danger took Aria’s breath away. He fought with everything he had, his movements fluid and precise, but even with all his skill, it was clear that this was not a battle they could win with brute strength alone.
The creature swiped at Liam with one massive, stone-like arm, and though Liam dodged the blow, the force of the attack sent him stumbling backward. Aria’s heart lurched as she saw him fall, but before the creature could strike again, she called upon the magic inside her—the magic of the elements.
Focusing on the fire that burned within her, she summoned a stream of flame, directing it toward the creature. The fire exploded from her fingertips, bright and powerful, hitting the creature’s shadowy form with a searing blast. The creature let out a deafening roar, reeling back in pain as the flames licked at its body. But it wasn’t enough.
The creature recovered quickly, its glowing eyes narrowing in fury as it turned its attention toward Aria. She could feel its dark magic closing in on her, oppressive and overwhelming, but she stood her ground, refusing to give in to fear.
"Liam!" she called out, her voice strained. "We need to work together! I can’t hold it off for long!"
Liam scrambled to his feet, his sword flashing as he rejoined the fight. "I’m right behind you!"
The creature charged again, its massive form barreling toward them with terrifying speed. Aria and Liam moved in unison, their movements synchronized as they dodged the creature’s attacks and fought back with everything they had. Liam’s sword flashed as he struck at the creature’s legs, trying to slow it down, while Aria called upon the elements—fire, water, earth, and air—using every ounce of her magic to keep the creature at bay.
But the creature was relentless. Each time they struck, it seemed to grow stronger, its dark magic pulsing with a malevolent energy that made the air itself feel thick and suffocating.
Aria’s strength was waning, and she could see that Liam was struggling too. They couldn’t keep this up for much longer. Suddenly, the compass in Aria’s hand began to glow brighter, its light cutting through the darkness like a beacon. The needle spun wildly, as if it was searching for something, and then, just as quickly, it stilled, pointing directly at the heart of the creature.
Aria’s eyes widened as the realization hit her. "Liam! The compass—it’s showing us where to strike!"
Liam’s gaze snapped to the compass, and then to the creature’s glowing chest. "That’s its weak spot."
Without hesitation, they moved together, their resolve unshakable. Liam lunged toward the creature, his sword aimed at the glowing point in its chest, while Aria summoned a powerful blast of wind, pushing the creature back and exposing its vulnerable core.
With a final, desperate strike, Liam drove his sword into the creature’s heart, and the chamber exploded with light. The creature let out one last, earth-shattering roar before its massive form disintegrated into a cloud of shadow and dust, its dark magic evaporating into the air. Aria collapsed to her knees, exhausted but alive. The compass in her hand pulsed softly, its light dimming as the magic in the chamber settled. She glanced over at Liam, who was breathing heavily but smiling, his sword still clutched in his hand.
"You did it," Aria whispered, her voice filled with awe.
Liam shook his head, his grin widening. "We did it."
But before they could fully catch their breath, the ground beneath them rumbled once more, and the walls of the chamber began to tremble. The temple was collapsing.
"Aria!" Liam shouted, pulling her to her feet. "We need to get out of here!"
With the sound of crumbling stone echoing around them, Aria and Liam sprinted toward the exit, their hearts pounding as the temple began to fall apart. The ground shook beneath their feet, and debris rained down from above, but they didn’t stop. They couldn’t. As they reached the tunnel, a massive piece of stone crashed down behind them, sealing off the chamber they had just escaped.
Aria and Liam stumbled out into the open air, gasping for breath as the temple collapsed behind them in a cloud of dust and rubble. For a moment, the world was still, the weight of their survival sinking in.
Liam, covered in dust and sweat, looked at Aria with a grin that spoke volumes of his relief. "So... think we can call that one a win?"
Aria let out a shaky laugh, her chest still tight with adrenaline. "I’d say we earned it."
