Chapter 16: Hostage Rescue in a Skyscraper

Chapter 16: Hostage Rescue in a Skyscraper
The neon lights of the city flickered in the distance as the sleek, black SUV cruised through the bustling streets. Miguel sat in the passenger seat, his jaw clenched in silent determination, while Julian drove with practiced ease, his eyes scanning the road ahead. In the back seat, Robo-Aubree was recalibrating her sensors, her gaze fixed on the small, holographic map of the skyscraper projected in front of her.
"Are you sure you're ready for this, Miguel?" Julian asked, his voice low but laced with concern.
Miguel nodded without hesitation.
"We don't have a choice. Those hostages won't make it through the night if we don’t act now."
Julian glanced at Robo-Aubree through the rearview mirror.
"And you're good with the plan?"
Robo-Aubree's voice was calm and steady, her eyes still focused on the map.
"I've run multiple simulations. The probability of success is high if we stick to the strategy."
Miguel took a deep breath, his hand unconsciously tightening around the strap of the bag at his feet. It was filled with the gear they would need for the mission guns, explosives, and other tactical equipment. But more than that, it contained their hope of getting out of this alive.
"All right," Julian said as he pulled into an alleyway a few blocks away from their target. The towering skyscraper loomed ahead, its glass façade reflecting the city lights. "We go in, get the hostages, and get out. No unnecessary risks."
"Agreed," Miguel replied, his voice firm.
Robo-Aubree gave a single nod.
"I'll access the building through the exterior. Once inside, I'll disable the internal security systems, allowing you both to move undetected."
Julian parked the SUV in the shadows, away from any prying eyes. The three of them stepped out, each one focused and ready. Miguel adjusted the strap of his bag, feeling the weight of responsibility heavy on his shoulders.
"Let's move," Julian whispered.
The trio made their way through the alley, their movements swift and silent. They stopped just outside the perimeter of the skyscraper, hidden from the guards who patrolled the entrance. Julian pulled out a small tablet, tapping into the building's external security feed. A series of camera angles appeared on the screen, showing the guards' positions.
"Three guards at the entrance," Julian murmured, pointing at the screen.
"Two more on the mezzanine level. If we trigger any alarms, they'll flood the place with reinforcements."
"That's why I’m going this way," Robo-Aubree said, stepping closer to the edge of the building. She scanned the wall, her enhanced vision quickly identifying the optimal route to scale the outside.
Miguel placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Be careful, Aubree."
She looked at him, her expression softening for just a moment.
"I will, Miguel."
With that, Robo-Aubree activated her internal mechanisms, her hands and feet gripping the wall with precision. She began to climb, her movements smooth and efficient as she ascended the side of the skyscraper, quickly disappearing from sight.
"She’ll be fine," Julian assured Miguel, though his voice was strained with underlying worry.
Miguel nodded, though he couldn’t shake the unease in his chest.
"We need to focus. Aubree’s counting on us."
Julian checked his watch, calculating the time it would take for Robo-Aubree to reach the floor where the hostages were held. "Give her a minute. Then we move."
They waited in tense silence, the seconds ticking by slowly. Then, through their earpieces, Robo-Aubree's voice crackled softly.
"I'm inside. Disabling the security systems now."
Julian quickly glanced at his tablet. The red dots representing active security measures began to flicker out, one by one. "She did it. We're clear to move."
Miguel and Julian approached the building, moving swiftly toward the entrance. As they reached the door, Julian pulled out a small device and attached it to the keypad, overriding the lock within seconds. The door slid open silently, and they slipped inside.
The lobby was eerily quiet, the only sound being the faint hum of the elevators in the distance. The two men moved through the shadows, sticking close to the walls as they made their way toward the stairs.
"Elevators are too risky," Julian whispered. "We take the stairs."
Miguel nodded, already moving ahead. They climbed quickly, their footsteps barely making a sound on the concrete steps. As they reached the first floor, Julian paused, checking the cameras once more.
"Two guards on this floor, armed. We need to take them out quietly."
Miguel pulled out a silenced pistol from his bag, his grip steady as he nodded to Julian. They moved in sync, rounding the corner and catching the guards off guard. Two quick shots, and the guards crumpled to the ground without a sound.
"Clear," Miguel whispered.
They continued up the stairs, floor by floor, taking out guards as they went. Robo-Aubree provided real-time updates, guiding them through the building with precision.
"Hostages are on the 25th floor," Robo-Aubree's voice came through the earpiece. "Four guards in the room with them, plus another two patrolling the hallway."
"We're almost there," Julian replied, his voice tense.
"Be ready."
When they reached the 25th floor, they paused at the door leading to the hallway. Julian checked the feed one last time before nodding to Miguel.
"We go on three."
Miguel took a deep breath, his mind focused on the task at hand.
"One… two… three."
They burst through the door, guns at the ready. Julian took out the two guards in the hallway with expert precision, while Miguel moved quickly toward the room where the hostages were being held.
Inside, the four guards reacted instantly, but Robo-Aubree was faster. She burst through a window, landing with inhuman grace as she engaged the closest guard in hand-to-hand combat. Her movements were a blur, disabling the guard before he even had a chance to fire his weapon.
Miguel and Julian took out the remaining guards, their gunfire precise and controlled. Within seconds, the room was clear.
The hostages, a group of terrified civilians, looked up in shock as the three rescuers stood before them. Miguel quickly moved to their side, assessing their condition.
"You're safe now. We're here to get you out."
One of the hostages, a young woman with tear-streaked cheeks, whispered,
"Thank you... thank you so much..."
Julian quickly checked the door, making sure the area was secure.
"We need to move fast. Reinforcements could be on the way."
Robo-Aubree nodded, already scanning for the safest route out.
"There’s a service elevator at the end of the hall. We can use it to bypass the main floors."
Miguel helped the hostages to their feet, urging them to stay close. "Follow us, and stay quiet."
They moved as a unit, with Robo-Aubree leading the way, her sensors picking up any movement ahead. Julian brought up the rear, his eyes constantly scanning for threats.
When they reached the service elevator, Robo-Aubree quickly accessed the control panel, overriding the system to take them directly to the underground parking garage.
"Elevator’s ready," she announced, stepping back as the doors slid open.
The group hurried inside, and the elevator descended smoothly, bypassing the main floors entirely. Miguel kept a reassuring hand on one of the hostages, who was trembling with fear.
"You’re going to be okay," he said softly. "We’re almost out of here."
The elevator reached the garage with a soft chime, and the doors opened to reveal the dark, cavernous space. Robo-Aubree stepped out first, scanning the area for any signs of danger. Satisfied that it was clear, she nodded to the others.
"Let’s move," Julian urged, guiding the hostages toward a waiting vehicle that had been arranged as part of their escape plan.
As they piled into the car, Robo-Aubree took one last look around the garage, her sensors still on high alert. Miguel and Julian secured the hostages in the back seat, making sure everyone was accounted for.
"Everyone in?" Miguel asked, glancing back to check.
"All clear," Julian confirmed, sliding into the driver’s seat. Robo-Aubree joined him in the front passenger seat, her eyes scanning the surroundings as they pulled out of the garage.
The city lights blurred as they sped through the streets, heading for the safety of the extraction point. The hostages remained silent, their fear slowly giving way to relief as the distance between them and the skyscraper grew.
Miguel leaned back in his seat, finally allowing himself to breathe. He glanced over at Robo-Aubree, who was still on high alert. "You did good, Aubree."
Robo-Aubree turned to look at him, her expression unreadable. "We all did."
Julian kept his focus on the road, but a small smile tugged at his lips.
"Another successful mission. Let's hope it’s the last one for a while."
Miguel nodded in agreement, but he knew that their fight was far from over. There were still too many unanswered questions, too many threats lurking in the shadows. But for now, they had won a small victory.
As they drove away from the chaos, Robo-Aubree finally allowed herself to relax, her sensors detecting no immediate threats. She looked out at the city lights, her thoughts returning to the hostages they had just saved. It was moments like these that reminded her of the importance of their mission
