The new semester was well underway, and Bella was beginning to feel a sense of normalcy again. “Hi, Dad. What’s going on?” Bella asked, her voice steady despite her unease.
Her father sighed, rubbing his hands together. “Bella, I’ve been trying to make amends and rebuild our relationship, but there’s something you need to know. My past has caught up with me.”
Bella’s heart sank. “What do you mean?”
“There are some people I used to associate with who aren’t happy about me trying to leave that life behind,” he explained, his voice filled with regret. “They’ve made threats, and I’m worried about your safety.”
Bella’s mind raced. “What kind of threats?”
“They’ve been following me, and I think they might try to use you to get to me,” he admitted, his voice breaking.
Bella felt a surge of fear and anger. “Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?”
“I didn’t want to scare you,” he said, looking down at the table. “I thought I could handle it on my own, but it’s getting worse.”
Bella took a deep breath, trying to process the situation. “What are we going to do?”
“I’m going to the police,” he said firmly. “I should have done it sooner, but I was afraid. I just wanted to keep you and your mother safe.”
Bella nodded, feeling a mix of emotions. “Okay, we’ll go to the police. But you need to be honest with them about everything.”
“I will,” he promised. “I’m done running.”
The next few days were a blur of police interviews and heightened security. Bella felt like her world had been turned upside down, but she knew it was necessary to ensure their safety. Ethan, her friends, and her mother were all incredibly supportive, providing comfort and reassurance.
