Chapter 3 The Silent Night

The night descended upon the city like a shroud, thick and suffocating. The rain, which had tapered off during the day, returned with a vengeance, pounding against the windows with relentless fury. Erika sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes fixed on the darkened room. The electricity was still out, casting everything in deep shadows. The only light came from the occasional flash of lightning, illuminating the room in brief, stark bursts.
Tommy lay beside her, his small body curled up under the blanket, sleeping soundly despite the chaos outside. Erika envied his ability to find peace in such a terrifying world. She brushed a strand of hair from his forehead, her heart aching with a mixture of love and fear. She had to be strong for him, had to protect him at all costs.
The neighborhood was silent, eerily so. The usual sounds of nighttime activity—the distant hum of traffic, the occasional bark of a dog, the murmur of voices—were conspicuously absent. It was as if the entire world had been swallowed by the darkness.
Erika strained her ears, listening for any sign of danger. The only sound was the relentless rain, a steady, drumming noise that filled the silence. She glanced at the window, half-expecting to see a figure lurking outside, but there was nothing. Just the rain and the darkness.
She stood up quietly, careful not to wake Tommy. She needed to check the apartment, to make sure everything was secure. She walked to the front door, her footsteps silent on the wooden floor. The door was locked and barricaded, just as she had left it. She checked the windows, making sure they were all closed and locked.
As she moved through the apartment, she couldn't shake the feeling of being watched. It was an irrational fear, she knew, but it gnawed at her nonetheless. She glanced over her shoulder, half-expecting to see someone standing there, but the room was empty.
Erika returned to the bedroom, feeling a little more at ease. She sat back down on the bed, her eyes never leaving Tommy. She had to stay vigilant, had to be ready for anything. She couldn't afford to let her guard down.
A sudden noise made her jump. It was faint, almost drowned out by the rain, but it was there. A soft, shuffling sound, like footsteps. Erika's heart pounded in her chest as she listened intently. The noise came again, closer this time. She stood up, her body tense with fear.
She moved to the window, peering out into the darkness. The rain made it difficult to see, but she could make out a figure moving slowly down the street. It was a man, staggering and clutching his stomach. Erika's heart raced as she watched him, her mind flashing back to the man she had seen earlier that day.
The man stumbled and fell to the ground, his body convulsing. Erika watched in horror as he began to twitch violently, his limbs jerking uncontrollably. She knew what was coming next. She had seen it on the news, had heard the stories. The man would rise again, but he would no longer be human.
Erika backed away from the window, her mind racing. She had to protect Tommy, had to keep him safe. She grabbed a chair and wedged it under the doorknob, creating an extra barrier. She then moved to the kitchen, grabbing a knife and clutching it tightly.
She returned to the bedroom, her eyes never leaving the door. She could hear the man outside, his movements slow and clumsy. She prayed that he would move on, that he wouldn't try to get inside.
The minutes stretched into an eternity as Erika stood there, her heart pounding in her chest. The rain continued to pour, the sound almost deafening. She glanced at Tommy, who was still sleeping peacefully, unaware of the danger outside.
Erika forced herself to take a deep breath, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She had to stay focused, had to be ready for anything. The night was far from over, and she knew that the real horrors were yet to come.
She stood watch, her eyes never leaving the door. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the relentless rain. Erika felt a chill run down her spine as she realized that this was their new reality. A world of darkness, fear, and unrelenting danger.
The hours passed slowly, each minute dragging on as Erika kept her vigil. She could hear the occasional distant scream, a chilling reminder of the chaos that had engulfed the city. But the apartment remained silent, the door securely barricaded.
As the night wore on, Erika's exhaustion began to take its toll. Her eyelids grew heavy, and she fought to stay awake. She couldn't afford to fall asleep, couldn't afford to let her guard down. But the events of the past days had drained her, and she felt herself slipping.
She glanced at Tommy, his peaceful face giving her a momentary sense of calm. She had to stay strong for him, had to protect him. She forced herself to stay awake, her grip on the knife tightening.
A sudden noise jolted her awake. It was a soft, scratching sound, coming from the front door. Erika's heart raced as she listened, her body tense with fear. The scratching continued, growing louder and more insistent.
Erika moved to the door, her hand trembling as she gripped the knife. She could hear the sound of something—or someone—trying to get in. She backed away, her mind racing with thoughts of what to do.
The scratching grew louder, more frantic. Erika's heart pounded in her chest as she watched the door, praying that it would hold. She glanced at Tommy, who was still sleeping soundly, unaware of the danger.
The scratching suddenly stopped, and Erika held her breath, listening intently. The silence was deafening, the only sound the relentless rain. She waited, her body tense, ready to react.
Minutes passed, and there was no further noise. Erika let out a shaky breath, her body relaxing slightly. She moved back to the bed, her eyes never leaving the door. The danger had passed, for now.
Erika sat down, her exhaustion overwhelming her. She knew she had to stay awake, had to keep watch. But her body was betraying her, her eyelids growing heavy. She fought to stay awake, her grip on the knife loosening.
As the night wore on, Erika's exhaustion finally won. She slumped against the bed, her eyes closing. The knife slipped from her hand, clattering to the floor. She drifted into a fitful sleep, her mind filled with nightmares of the horrors outside.
The rain continued to pour, the sound a constant reminder of the darkness that had engulfed their world. The night was silent, eerily so, as Erika and Tommy slept, unaware of the dangers that lurked just beyond their door.
Erika jolted awake, her heart pounding in her chest. The frantic knocking at the door echoed through the silent apartment, each bang sending a jolt of fear through her. She reached for the knife on the floor, her hands trembling as she clutched it tightly.
"Erika! It's me, Jason! Let me in, please!" The voice was desperate, barely audible over the relentless rain.
Erika hesitated, her mind racing. Jason... Jason... her ex. But in this world, trust was a luxury they could scarcely afford. She glanced at Tommy, still sleeping soundly, and steeled herself. She had to be sure.
"Jason? Is it really you?" she called out, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Yes, it's me! Please, Erika, hurry!" Jason's voice was strained, filled with urgency.
Erika moved to the door, her heart pounding. She carefully removed the chair wedged under the doorknob and unlocked the door, opening it just enough to see Jason's face. He was drenched, his clothes plastered to his body, and his breath came in ragged gasps.
Without another word, Erika pulled the door open and Jason stumbled inside, water pooling around his feet. She quickly shut and locked the door, then re-barricaded it with the chair. Jason leaned against the wall, panting heavily, his eyes wide with fear.
"Thank you," he whispered, his voice barely audible. He gestured for Erika to be silent, his eyes darting to the door.
Erika nodded, her heart still racing. She watched as Jason moved to the window, peering out into the darkness. He seemed satisfied that they were safe, for now, and turned back to Erika.
"They're everywhere," he said, his voice low. "I barely made it here. We have to be careful."
Erika nodded again, her mind racing with questions. But she knew now wasn't the time. She moved to Tommy, gently shaking him awake. His eyes fluttered open, and he looked up at her with confusion.
"What's going on?" he mumbled, rubbing his eyes.
"Shh, it's okay," Erika whispered, glancing at Jason. "We have a friend here. We need to stay quiet."
Tommy nodded sleepily, his trust in Erika unwavering. He sat up, looking at Jason with curiosity.
Jason moved to the door, checking the barricade one more time. Satisfied, he turned back to Erika and Tommy, his face etched with worry.
"We need to stay together," he said quietly. "It's the only way we'll survive this."
Erika nodded, her resolve strengthening. She had to protect Tommy, and now Jason too. They were in this together, and together, they had a chance.
The night stretched on, the rain a constant backdrop to their silent vigil. The world outside was dark and dangerous, but inside, they had each other. And that, Erika knew, was their greatest strength.
