Chapter 10 It's Near

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the walls of the house. The air grew colder, and the oppressive silence of the city night settled in. Erika knew the decision had been made, but a gnawing feeling of dread still ate at her. She glanced over at Jason, who was busy securing the last of their supplies.
She knew deep down that she and Tommy were a burden to Jason, especially Tommy. A child in the middle of an apocalypse was more than just an inconvenience; it was a liability. But she couldn't let Jason go alone. She had to protect her brother, even if it meant making difficult choices.
As darkness enveloped the city, the radio crackled to life once more. "Attention, all survivors. The creatures are less active in the darkness, but their hearing is exceptionally sharp. Move silently and stay hidden. Repeat, move silently and stay hidden."
Erika took a deep breath, her heart pounding in her chest. She turned to Jason, her voice barely above a whisper. "We need to move now, while it's dark. The stadium isn't far, but we have to be careful."
Jason nodded, his face set with determination. "We'll make it, Erika. Just stay close and keep Tommy quiet."
Tommy, sensing the gravity of the situation, clung to Erika's hand, his eyes wide with fear. "I’ll be quiet, Erika. I promise."
With one last look around the house that had given them a brief respite, they slipped out into the night. The streets were eerily silent, the only sounds the distant groans of the infected and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.
They moved cautiously, each step deliberate and slow. The darkness was both a blessing and a curse, hiding them from the creatures but also concealing potential dangers. Erika's heart raced with every creak of the pavement, every distant noise that echoed through the empty streets.
Jason led the way, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of movement. Erika followed closely, her grip on Tommy's hand tightening with each passing moment. The tension was palpable, every nerve in her body on high alert.
As they approached a narrow alleyway, Jason raised his hand, signaling them to stop. He crouched down, peering around the corner. Erika held her breath, the seconds stretching into an eternity. Finally, Jason motioned for them to follow.
They moved silently through the alley, the walls closing in around them. The darkness seemed to pulse with unseen threats, every shadow a potential hiding place for the creatures. Erika's mind raced, her thoughts a whirlwind of fear and determination. She had to protect Tommy, no matter what.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the night, shattering the silence. Erika's heart leapt into her throat, and she instinctively pulled Tommy closer. Jason froze, his eyes wide with alarm. They waited, every muscle tensed, listening for any sign of the creatures.
The seconds ticked by, agonizingly slow. Then, faintly, they heard the sound of shuffling footsteps, growing louder with each passing moment. The creatures were coming.
Jason motioned for them to move, his urgency clear. They darted into a nearby building, the door creaking ominously as they slipped inside. The interior was dark and musty, the air heavy with the scent of decay. They moved deeper into the building, searching for a place to hide.
Erika's heart pounded in her ears, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She could hear the creatures outside, their guttural growls and shuffling footsteps growing closer. They had to stay quiet, had to stay hidden.
Jason found a small storage room at the back of the building, and they quickly slipped inside. He closed the door silently, the darkness enveloping them. Erika held Tommy close, her hand over his mouth to keep him from making any noise.
The minutes stretched into an eternity as they waited, the sounds of the creatures just outside the door. Erika's mind raced, every nerve in her body screaming with fear. She prayed that they would pass by, that they wouldn't find them.
Finally, after what felt like hours, the sounds began to fade. The creatures were moving on, their footsteps growing fainter. Erika let out a silent sigh of relief, her body trembling with the release of tension.
Jason looked at her, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination. "We need to keep moving. The stadium isn't far."
Erika nodded, her resolve strengthening. They had made it this far, and they would make it to the stadium. Together, they would survive.
They slipped out of the storage room, moving silently through the building and back into the night. The journey was far from over, but they had each other, and that was enough to keep them going.
As they moved through the darkened streets, the stadium looming in the distance, Erika held onto the hope that they would find safety. For Tommy, for Jason, and for herself, she would keep fighting. And in the silence of the night, they pressed on, determined to survive.
The city had transformed into a graveyard of steel and concrete. As Erika, Jason, and Tommy moved through the deserted streets, the eerie silence was punctuated only by the occasional gust of wind, which carried the faint, metallic scent of blood. The once bustling metropolis now lay in ruins, a haunting testament to the chaos that had unfolded.
Cars were abandoned in the middle of the road, their doors flung open as if the occupants had fled in a desperate hurry. Some vehicles were smeared with dark, dried blood, their interiors a macabre display of violence. Shattered glass glittered on the pavement like sinister confetti, reflecting the pale moonlight.
Erika's breath caught in her throat as they turned a corner and came face to face with a particularly gruesome scene. A large delivery truck had crashed into a storefront, its windshield splattered with blood. The driver's seat was empty, but the dashboard was smeared with handprints, as if someone had tried to claw their way out. The store itself was a wreck, its windows shattered and its contents strewn across the sidewalk. Shelves lay toppled, their goods scattered and trampled.
But it was the absence of bodies that unnerved Erika the most. There was blood—so much blood—painting the streets and walls, but not a single corpse in sight. It was as if the people had simply vanished, leaving only their life essence behind. The city felt like a stage set for a horror play, waiting for the actors to return.
As they continued their cautious journey, they came across a small park. The once vibrant playground was now a scene of desolation. Swings creaked eerily in the wind, their chains rusted and stained. The sandbox was littered with broken toys, their bright colors dulled by a coating of grime and blood. A child's tricycle lay on its side, one wheel still spinning slowly, as if recently abandoned.
Tommy clung to Erika's hand, his eyes wide with fear. She could feel his small body trembling, and she squeezed his hand reassuringly. "Stay close, Tommy," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Jason led the way, his eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of movement. The tension was palpable, each step a deliberate effort to remain silent. The city seemed to hold its breath, as if waiting for something to happen.
They approached a narrow alleyway, its entrance marked by a trail of blood that led deeper into the darkness. Erika's heart pounded in her chest as they cautiously entered the alley. The walls were covered in graffiti, some of it hastily scrawled messages of desperation and fear. "HELP," "RUN," and "THEY'RE COMING" were written in large, uneven letters, the paint still fresh.
As they moved deeper into the alley, the darkness seemed to close in around them. The air was thick with the stench of decay, and every sound seemed amplified in the oppressive silence. Erika's mind raced with thoughts of what could be lurking in the shadows.
Suddenly, a loud clattering noise echoed through the alley, causing them all to freeze. Erika's heart leapt into her throat as she strained to listen. The sound had come from a nearby dumpster, its lid now slightly ajar. Jason motioned for them to stay back as he cautiously approached the dumpster, his flashlight held tightly in his hand.
He lifted the lid slowly, the hinges creaking ominously. Erika held her breath, her eyes locked on the dumpster. For a moment, there was only silence. Then, with a sudden burst of movement, a large rat scurried out, disappearing into the darkness.
Erika let out a shaky breath, her body trembling with the release of tension. Jason closed the dumpster lid and turned back to them, his face pale but determined. "Let's keep moving," he said quietly.
As they emerged from the alley, the city stretched out before them, a vast, empty expanse of desolation. The stadium was visible in the distance, its silhouette a beacon of hope amidst the chaos. They pressed on, their footsteps echoing in the silent streets.
The journey was far from over, and the city held many more horrors yet to be discovered. But they had each other, and that was enough to keep them moving forward. In the eerie silence of the abandoned city, they found strength in their unity, determined to survive whatever lay ahead.
The trio navigated the deserted streets of Manila, the oppressive silence pressing down on them like a weight. The moon cast an eerie glow, illuminating the desolate landscape with an otherworldly light. They moved cautiously, their footsteps echoing off the steel and concrete graveyard that the city had become.
As they turned a corner, Erika's flashlight beam fell upon a narrow alleyway. The light caught on something, causing her to pause. There, huddled in the corner, was a man. His body twitched violently, his limbs jerking in unnatural spasms.
"Guys, look," Erika whispered, her voice trembling.
Jason and Tommy turned their attention to the figure. The man's clothes were tattered and stained with blood. His skin was pale, almost ghostly, and his eyes were wide and unfocused, darting around as if seeing things that weren't there. His fingers drummed erratically against the ground, creating a soft, rhythmic tapping that sent chills down their spines.
"What's wrong with him?" Tommy asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jason's eyes narrowed, his instincts screaming at him to stay away. "We need to keep moving," he said firmly. "We can't afford to get involved."
But as they started to back away, the man's head snapped up, his eyes locking onto them with a wild, feral intensity. His mouth opened in a silent scream, and his body convulsed even more violently.
The man's convulsions suddenly ceased, and he went still. For a moment, the alley was plunged into an eerie silence, the only sound the ragged breathing of the trio. Then, with a sudden, inhuman speed, the man lunged at them, his mouth open in a silent scream.
Erika's flashlight fell to the ground, its beam casting wild, erratic shadows as it rolled. Jason reacted quickly, pulling Erika and Tommy back. The man stumbled, his body hitting the ground with a sickening thud.
"Run!" Jason shouted, grabbing Erika's hand and pulling her along. Tommy clung to Erika's side, his small body trembling with fear.
They sprinted down the street, their hearts pounding in their chests. The memory of the twitching man haunted their thoughts, a chilling reminder of the thin line between life and death in this forsaken world. As they continued their journey towards the stadium, they couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that something—or someone—was lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike.
