Chapter 19: Digital Doppelgangers
Chapter 19: Digital Doppelgangers
The sun was beginning to set over the city, casting long shadows across the streets as Journey and Turner made their way to Dr. Santiago’s lab. Their recent encounter with Volume had left them more determined than ever to stop Larkson, but the minion’s cryptic warning about future plans had them on edge.
As they walked, Journey looked at Turner with concern.
“I can’t shake off Volume’s words. What if Larkson’s next move is something we can’t anticipate?”
Turner nodded, his expression serious.
“We’ll just have to be ready for anything. Whatever Larkson throws at us, we’ll face it together.”
They arrived at the lab, where Dr. Santiago was waiting for them, his face etched with worry.
“I’m glad you two are here. I’ve been monitoring Larkson’s activities, and something strange is happening online.”
Journey raised an eyebrow.
“What do you mean, strange?”
Dr. Santiago brought up a screen displaying various social media feeds.
“Look at this. Videos and posts from what appear to be you two, causing havoc across the city.”
Turner and Journey exchanged shocked glances as they watched footage of their digital doppelgangers vandalizing property, attacking civilians, and engaging in all sorts of criminal activities.
“That’s not us!” Turner exclaimed.
“We’ve been fighting to protect the city, not destroy it!”
Dr. Santiago nodded.
“I know, but these videos are going viral. People are starting to believe that you’ve turned rogue.”
Journey clenched her fists in frustration. “This must be Larkson’s doing. He’s trying to discredit us, make everyone lose trust in us.”
Dr. Santiago tapped a few keys on his keyboard, bringing up more information. “These digital clones are highly sophisticated. They’ve hacked into multiple systems and are spreading their falsehoods rapidly. We need to find a way to counteract this.”
Turner took a deep breath, his mind racing. “We need to prove that these clones aren’t us. If we can catch one of them in the act and show the world the truth, we can start to turn the tide.”
Journey nodded.
“And we need to figure out where Larkson is controlling them from. If we can shut down his operation, we can stop this madness.”
Dr. Santiago handed them a small device. “This is a signal tracer. It should help you locate the source of the digital clones’ signals. Be careful, both of you. Larkson is getting more dangerous.”
With a plan in place, Journey and Turner set out to find the doppelgangers. As they moved through the city, they kept a low profile, avoiding any unnecessary attention. It wasn’t long before they received an alert on the tracer.
“There’s a strong signal coming from the old tech district,” Journey said, checking the device.
“That must be where they’re operating from.”
They hurried to the location, finding an abandoned building that seemed to pulse with digital energy. Turner glanced at Journey. “Ready?”
Journey nodded, her eyes steely with determination. “Let’s do this.”
They entered the building, moving cautiously through the dimly lit hallways. The walls were lined with old computer equipment, flickering screens, and tangled wires. As they reached the main control room, they found themselves face-to-face with their digital clones.
The doppelgangers turned to them, identical smirks on their faces. “Well, well, look who decided to show up,” said the fake Turner.
The real Turner glared at his clone. “We’re here to stop you. Whatever Larkson is planning, it ends now.”
The fake Journey laughed. “You really think you can stop us? We’re just as powerful as you, maybe even more so.”
Journey took a step forward, her fists glowing with energy. “We’ll see about that.”
The battle began with a flurry of sound and light. Turner sent out echo duplicates to counter the digital clones, while Journey used her time-weaving to dodge their attacks and strike back. The room filled with the sound of clashing powers, the air crackling with energy.
The digital clones were formidable, matching their every move with eerie precision. The fake Turner created his own echoes, causing chaos and confusion. The fake Journey manipulated time just as effectively, making it difficult for the real heroes to gain the upper hand.
Turner realized they needed to disrupt the clones’ connection to their source. “Journey, we need to find the control hub. That’s how they’re being controlled.”
Journey nodded, understanding immediately. “Cover me.”
As Turner engaged the clones, Journey used her time-weaving to move swiftly through the room, searching for the control hub. She spotted a central console, wires snaking out of it like tentacles. It was protected by a force field, but she knew she had to disable it.
The fake Journey noticed her approach and moved to intercept. “Not so fast. You’re not ruining our plans.”
Journey dodged a time-manipulated attack, countering with a blast of energy that sent her clone staggering. She reached the console and began working on disabling the force field, her fingers flying over the controls.
Meanwhile, Turner was locked in a fierce struggle with his clone. The room echoed with the sound of their powers clashing, each trying to outmaneuver the other. Turner’s real echoes worked together, creating a coordinated assault that began to wear down the digital clone.
Journey managed to disable the force field, exposing the console’s inner workings. She quickly began to dismantle the control unit, knowing that it was their only chance to stop the clones. The fake Journey lunged at her, but Journey was ready, using her time-weaving to slow the attack and deliver a powerful punch that knocked the clone back.
Turner, seeing an opening, unleashed a final, concentrated blast of sound that shattered his clone’s defenses. The digital doppelganger disintegrated into pixels, leaving only the real Turner standing.
Journey completed her task, and the control console sparked and fizzled as it shut down. The fake Journey let out a distorted scream as she too disintegrated into digital fragments.
The room fell silent, the energy dissipating as the digital clones were erased. Turner and Journey stood together, breathing heavily but victorious.
“We did it,” Turner said, a smile spreading across his face. “We stopped them.”
Journey nodded, her expression one of relief. “But we still need to show the world what really happened. We need to clear our names.”
Turner held up the signal tracer. “This recorded everything. We have proof of Larkson’s scheme and our battle with the clones. Let’s get this to Dr. Santiago.”
They returned to the lab, where Dr. Santiago eagerly awaited their report. He quickly analyzed the data from the tracer, his eyes widening as he watched the footage.
“This is incredible,” he said. “With this evidence, we can expose Larkson’s plot and restore your reputations.”
Journey and Turner stood side by side, feeling a sense of hope and determination. “We’re not done yet,” Turner said. “Larkson is still out there, and we need to stop him.”
Dr. Santiago nodded. “I’ll work on broadcasting this evidence. In the meantime, stay vigilant. Larkson won’t take this defeat lightly.”
As they left the lab, Journey looked at Turner with a determined smile. “We’ll keep fighting, no matter what. Together, we’re unstoppable.”
Turner grinned back, feeling the bond between them strengthen with each passing moment. “Together.”
With their reputations on the mend and their resolve stronger than ever, Journey and Turner prepared for the battles yet to come. They knew that Larkson’s plans were still unfolding, but with each other’s support, they were ready to face any challenge and protect their city from any threat.Download Novelah App
