Chapter 2: The Nightmare Begins Kyla stirred in her sleep, a sense of unease tugging at the edges of her consciousness. She turned over, hoping to find solace in Darwin's warmth beside her. But as she shifted, a cold, hard reality struck her—she couldn’t move her arms. Her eyes snapped open, and she found herself staring at the dimly lit ceiling of the living room. Panic surged through her veins as she realized she was bound tightly to the staircase railing, her wrists and ankles secured with rough, scratchy rope. Her heart pounded in her chest as she struggled to make sense of the situation. "Darwin?" she called out, her voice trembling. A low moan answered her from the darkness. She turned her head and her breath caught in her throat. Darwin lay sprawled on the floor, blood pooling around his head, his face a mask of pain and confusion. "Darwin!" Kyla screamed, thrashing against her bonds. "No, no, no!" A movement in the corner of her eye drew her attention. Heidi stood over Darwin, her small frame silhouetted against the faint glow of the dying fire. In her hand, she held a hammer, its head glistening with fresh blood. Heidi’s expression was devoid of any emotion, her eyes—those pitch-black eyes—fixed on Darwin with a chilling focus. With a swift, brutal motion, she brought the hammer down again, striking Darwin's head with a sickening thud. Kyla's scream pierced the night, filled with pure, unadulterated terror. "Stop! Please, stop!" The other children, now standing around her, brandished saws and knives, their twisted smiles revealing an almost gleeful anticipation. They moved closer, their steps slow and deliberate, their dark eyes never leaving hers. "Why are you doing this?" Kyla cried, her voice breaking with desperation. Heidi turned to her, the hammer still clutched in her hand. "Because we have to," she said simply, as if that explained everything. Kyla's heart pounded in her chest, her vision blurring with tears. "You don't have to do this! We want to help you!" Heidi's expression softened for a brief moment, almost as if she was considering Kyla's words. But then, the hardness returned, and she took a step closer. "You can't help us. No one can." Just as Heidi raised the hammer again, a loud, insistent knock echoed through the house. The children froze, their eyes wide with surprise and fear. The knock came again, louder this time, and then a third time, more urgent than the last. Heidi's grip on the hammer faltered, and she glanced towards the front door, her face a mask of indecision. "We have to go," she whispered to the other children. "Now." The children hesitated for a moment, their eyes darting between Kyla and the door. Then, without another word, they turned and fled, disappearing into the shadows of the house. Heidi paused at the doorway, her black eyes meeting Kyla's. "We'll be back," she promised, her voice chillingly calm. "This isn’t over." With that, she vanished into the darkness, leaving Kyla bound and trembling with fear. The sound of hurried footsteps approached, and a group of neighbors burst through the front door, their faces pale and alarmed. "Oh my God," one of them gasped, taking in the horrifying scene. "Call the police!" another shouted, already reaching for their phone. Within moments, the house was filled with the flashing lights and urgent voices of emergency responders. Paramedics rushed to Darwin’s side, working frantically to stabilize him, while a police officer cut the ropes binding Kyla. "Are you alright, ma'am?" the officer asked, his voice steady but filled with concern. Kyla nodded numbly, her eyes fixed on Darwin's lifeless form. "Please, save him," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "We're doing everything we can," the paramedic assured her, his hands moving swiftly as he applied pressure to Darwin's wounds. Kyla’s mind swirled with confusion and fear. The events of the night felt like a terrible dream, a nightmare she couldn't wake from. She clung to the hope that Darwin would survive, that they would somehow get through this together. As the paramedics prepared to transport Darwin to the hospital, a detective approached Kyla, his face grave but kind. "Ma'am, I’m Detective Andrew Roberts. I know this is a difficult time, but we need to ask you some questions about what happened here tonight." Kyla nodded, her body trembling with shock and exhaustion. "I’ll tell you everything," she said, her voice a mere whisper. Detective Roberts led her to the kitchen, where she sat down, her hands shaking. He pulled up a chair beside her, a notebook in hand. "Can you start from the beginning? How did the children come to be here?" Kyla took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "It was raining, and we heard a knock at the door. When we opened it, there were these children, soaked and scared. They said their bus had crashed, so we let them in." Roberts nodded, jotting down notes. "And what happened after that?" "We gave them towels, dry clothes, and some food. They were so quiet, so strange, but we just thought they were in shock." Kyla’s voice broke as she recalled the eerie calm of the children. "Their eyes... their eyes were completely black." Roberts looked up, his expression unreadable. "Black eyes?" "Yes," Kyla whispered. "No whites, no pupils. Just black." The detective paused, then continued writing. "And then?" "We went to bed, and I woke up tied to the staircase. Darwin was... he was..." Kyla’s voice faltered as she struggled to find the words. "Heidi, the girl, she was hitting him with a hammer. The other children had saws and knives. They were going to... they were going to kill us." Roberts placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You’re safe now. We’ll find these children and make sure they can't hurt anyone else." Kyla nodded, tears streaming down her face. "Please, find them. Stop them." As the detective continued his questioning, the paramedics wheeled Darwin out on a stretcher, his face pale and bloodied but alive. Kyla's heart ached at the sight of him, but a flicker of hope ignited within her. He was still alive, and as long as he lived, there was a chance they could overcome this nightmare. "Ma'am," a paramedic called out, "we're taking your husband to the hospital now. You can ride with us if you’d like." Kyla nodded gratefully and stood up, her legs shaky but determined. "I’m coming with you," she said, her voice filled with resolve. Detective Roberts handed her a card. "We’ll be in touch. If you remember anything else, don’t hesitate to call." Kyla took the card and pocketed it. "Thank you," she whispered, then followed the paramedics out to the waiting ambulance. As the doors closed behind her, Kyla sat beside Darwin, clutching his hand tightly. She watched his face, willing him to wake up, to open his eyes and tell her it was all a bad dream. But deep down, she knew the nightmare was far from over. In the distance, she could still hear Heidi’s chilling promise: "We’ll be back." The ambulance sped through the rain-slicked streets, sirens wailing, as Kyla’s mind raced with fear and determination. She had to be strong for Darwin, for herself, and for the countless others who might fall victim to the Black-Eyed Children. The road ahead was uncertain and fraught with danger, but Kyla knew one thing for sure: she would do whatever it took to stop the children and uncover the dark truth behind their malevolent eyes. As they reached the hospital, Kyla steeled herself for the battles to come. She wasn’t just fighting for her husband’s life; she was fighting for their future, for the love that had brought them together and the life they had dreamed of building. In that moment, amidst the chaos and fear, Kyla made a silent vow: she would not let the Black-Eyed Children win. She would find a way to protect her family and bring an end to their reign of terror. The nightmare had only just begun, but Kyla was determined to see it through to the end, no matter the cost.
