Chapter 175 The Shattered Illusion

The firelight flickered in the chamber, casting long, wavering shadows on the stone walls. It was a quiet, unsettling kind of silence that hung heavy in the air, broken only by the occasional crackle of the dwindling flames. Rannah’s hands were still trembling, the Heart of the Earth now darkened in her grip. For the first time, it felt as though it was slipping through her fingers—its warmth, its pulse, its very essence, all slipping away like sand in an hourglass.
“Hannah,” Rannah whispered, her voice barely a breath. “What have we done?”
Hannah knelt beside her, her expression a mixture of concern and disbelief. The force of Lorien’s magic had left a scar—one that wouldn’t fade easily. “We haven’t done anything wrong, Rannah. We’re still standing, and that means there’s still a chance.”
But even as she spoke, her words seemed hollow, as if she, too, wasn’t convinced.
Rannah’s fingers brushed over the Heart’s surface, her brow furrowed in confusion. “But Lorien... he’s inside it now. He’s bound himself to the Heart somehow. I can feel it. The Heart is... changing.”
Hannah’s face twisted in worry. “So we’re not just fighting him now. We’re fighting... something inside the Heart? How do we even begin to fight that?”
Rannah hesitated, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts. The pieces were falling into place, but they didn’t fit together neatly—like a puzzle with too many missing parts. Lorien had always been ambitious, driven by power, but this... this was beyond anything she had anticipated. He hadn’t just sought the Heart; he had found a way to become one with it.
Her eyes shot to the crumbling walls of the chamber, the ancient carvings now dark and twisted, as though the magic of the Heart was warping the very world around them. “We’re running out of time. The Heart is changing, and so is the world.”
Hannah stood, her hand resting on her sword as she scanned the room. “We’ll figure it out. We’ve always figured it out before.”
But Rannah wasn’t so sure anymore. She had seen what Lorien was capable of, and the feeling that gnawed at her gut told her that this time was different. The Heart wasn’t just an artifact—it was a living, breathing force, and now it was under Lorien’s control.
Before she could respond, a sharp crack echoed through the chamber, followed by a tremor that shook the ground beneath their feet. The walls groaned and shifted, as though the very foundations of the mountain were being torn apart.
“Not good,” Hannah muttered, stepping back toward Rannah. “What now?”
Rannah’s heart pounded in her chest, the familiar tug of the shards still faintly pulling at her. It was weaker now, almost as if the Heart itself was retreating from her touch. “We have to stop him before he completely takes control. If we don’t, he’ll have the power to reshape the world—and not in a way that’s going to end well for anyone.”
A low, guttural laugh echoed through the chamber. It was familiar, but twisted, distorted by the power of the Heart. Lorien’s voice slithered from the shadows, the words slashing through the tension like a blade.
“You’re too late, Rannah,” Lorien’s voice boomed, each syllable laced with a sinister echo. “You and your sister have played your parts. Now, the world will bend to my will.”
Rannah’s blood ran cold. The sound of his voice—so familiar, yet corrupted by the Heart’s magic—sent a chill down her spine. She could feel it now, the weight of his presence inside the Heart, like an invasive parasite slowly suffocating the life from it.
“No...” Rannah whispered, stepping back instinctively. “This isn’t you, Lorien. You can still stop this.”
But the shadows shifted, and from them emerged Lorien’s figure—no longer the man she had once known, but something darker, something far more dangerous. His eyes glowed with a faint, unnatural light, and his face was twisted in a smirk that sent a pang of grief through Rannah’s heart.
“You’ve always underestimated me,” Lorien sneered, his voice low and cold. “You never saw the potential within me. The Heart is my birthright, Rannah. It always has been.”
Hannah stepped forward, her sword raised in challenge. “We’ll stop you. Whatever it takes.”
Lorien’s laugh was hollow, mocking. “You think you can fight me now? The Heart is mine. It’s already begun to change the world, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it.”
Rannah felt a pulse in her chest, a soft, rhythmic thrum that echoed with the Heart’s power. But it wasn’t the Heart she was feeling—it was the shards. The shards she had carried, the shards she had protected. They were calling to her now, their presence growing stronger.
A sudden realization dawned on her. The shards weren’t just fragments of the Heart—they were the key to unlocking the true power of the Heart, the key to stopping Lorien before he could plunge the world into chaos.
“Rannah?” Hannah’s voice cut through her thoughts, urgent. “What are you thinking?”
Rannah looked up at her sister, her expression hardening. “We need to unite the shards,” she said, determination flashing in her eyes. “The shards will give us the strength to stop him.”
“But how?” Hannah asked, her voice laced with doubt. “We don’t even know where the other shards are. How can we unite them if we don’t have them all?”
Rannah’s lips curled into a grim smile. “We don’t need to find them. We already have what we need.”
She reached into her pouch, pulling out the two shards she had carried with her for so long. As soon as they touched her hands, they pulsed in unison, their energy vibrating against her skin. The connection was immediate, and Rannah felt the surge of power deep within her soul.
The Heart’s glow flickered, as if in response. The dark magic that had seeped into the chamber seemed to waver, as though the Heart itself was struggling against Lorien’s hold.
“Now,” Rannah whispered, her voice filled with quiet authority. “We fight fire with fire.”
With a swift motion, she pressed the shards together, and the world around them seemed to stop. The air grew thick with power, and the very ground beneath their feet hummed with the energy of the Heart.
Lorien’s eyes widened, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his features for the first time since he had entered the chamber.
“What have you done?” he hissed, taking a step back.
“I’ve done what you couldn’t,” Rannah replied, her voice firm. “I’ve united the pieces you tried to tear apart. And now... it’s time to end this.”
The light of the Heart surged, and Rannah felt its power course through her, burning away the dark magic that had taken root. The chamber trembled, the walls cracking as though they, too, were being torn apart by the sheer force of the Heart’s power.
Lorien’s face twisted in fury. “No! This isn’t how it was supposed to end!”
But it was too late. The Heart of the Earth pulsed one final time, a brilliant flash of light that filled the room, blinding them both.
And when the light faded, all that remained was silence.
Rannah stood, breathing heavily, the shards still glowing faintly in her hands. The Heart was whole, its power now balanced and pure. Lorien was gone, vanquished by the very force he had sought to control.
But as Rannah looked at the Heart, a shiver ran down her spine.
