Chapter 5: The Spiked Drink
Chapter 5: The Spiked Drink
The dimly lit bar buzzed with activity as Palmer and Beckett sat across from each other, their eyes locked in a silent battle of wills. Palmer's mind raced with thoughts of revenge as she carefully spiked Beckett's drink with a powerful laxative, her lips curling into a satisfied smirk as she watched him take a sip.
Beckett raised an eyebrow as he caught Palmer's smug expression, his curiosity piqued by her sudden change in demeanor. "What's got you so pleased with yourself?" he asked, his tone laced with suspicion.
Palmer shrugged nonchalantly, feigning innocence as she took a sip of her own drink. "Oh, nothing," she replied, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "Just enjoying the atmosphere."
But Beckett wasn't fooled by Palmer's facade, his eyes narrowing as he studied her carefully. "You're up to something," he accused, his voice low and dangerous. "What did you do to my drink?"
Palmer's smirk widened into a grin as she leaned back in her chair, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Wouldn't you like to know," she teased, a twinkle of amusement dancing in her gaze.
Before Beckett could respond, a sudden urgency gripped him, his stomach churning with discomfort as he realized that something was terribly wrong. With a panicked look, he pushed his chair back and bolted for the restroom, his hand clutching his stomach as he stumbled through the crowded bar.
Palmer watched with satisfaction as Beckett disappeared into the restroom, a smug grin spreading across her face as she reveled in her victory. But her triumph was short-lived, as a sudden wave of nausea washed over her, her own stomach roiling with discomfort.
With a sinking feeling in her gut, Palmer realized what had happened—Beckett had switched drinks with her, thwarting her plans for revenge and turning the tables on her in the most humiliating way possible.
Cursing under her breath, Palmer pushed herself away from the table and made a beeline for the restroom, her face flushed with embarrassment as she prayed for a miracle to save her from further humiliation.
Meanwhile, Beckett leaned against the bathroom stall, his face pale with discomfort as he struggled to regain control of his body. He couldn't believe that Palmer had stooped to such a low tactic, but he had to admit—he had underestimated her resourcefulness.
As he waited for the worst of the symptoms to pass, Beckett couldn't help but chuckle at the absurdity of the situation. He had always prided himself on his ability to outsmart his enemies, but Palmer had proven to be a formidable opponent—one who was not to be underestimated.
Back at the table, the other patrons of the bar exchanged puzzled glances as they watched Palmer and Beckett's frantic dash to the restroom. Some whispered among themselves, speculating about what could have caused such a sudden and urgent need for relief.
But for Palmer and Beckett, the only thing that mattered was finding a way to alleviate their discomfort and salvage what little dignity they had left. As they emerged from the restroom, their faces flushed with embarrassment, they exchanged a sheepish glance, a silent acknowledgment of the absurdity of their situation.
With a weary sigh, Palmer and Beckett returned to their table, their rivalry momentarily forgotten in the face of their shared humiliation. And as they sat in awkward silence, nursing their drinks and nursing their wounded pride, they couldn't help but wonder what other surprises awaited them in their ongoing battle of wits and wills.
The rain poured down in relentless sheets as Palmer stood on the street corner, her eyes narrowed in determination as she watched Beckett approach from across the street. She had been waiting for this moment, biding her time until she could strike—until she could rid herself of Beckett once and for all.
With a quick glance around to ensure that no one was watching, Palmer reached into her coat pocket and retrieved the umbrella rigged with explosives. Her heart pounded in her chest with anticipation as she carefully primed the device, her fingers trembling with adrenaline as she prepared to make her move.
As Beckett drew nearer, Palmer's grip tightened on the handle of the umbrella, her mind racing with thoughts of revenge and retribution. She had sworn to destroy Beckett, to erase him from existence and eliminate the threat he posed to her and her agency.
But just as Palmer was about to unleash the explosive force of the rigged umbrella, Beckett stepped out from beneath the awning of a nearby building, his own umbrella held aloft in a gesture of defiance.
Palmer's heart skipped a beat at the sight of Beckett's umbrella, her plan thrown into disarray by his unexpected move. With a curse under her breath, she hesitated, unsure of whether to proceed with her attack or wait for another opportunity.
Meanwhile, Beckett's eyes narrowed in suspicion as he caught sight of Palmer's tense posture and clenched fists. He knew that something was wrong, that Palmer was up to something—but he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was.
With a wary glance around, Beckett approached Palmer cautiously, his senses on high alert as he prepared for whatever trap she had set for him. "What's the matter, Palmer?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous. "You look like you've seen a ghost."
Palmer's jaw clenched at Beckett's words, her grip tightening on the umbrella as she struggled to contain her anger and frustration. "Don't play games with me, Beckett," she spat, her voice dripping with venom. "You know exactly what's going on here."
Beckett raised an eyebrow in surprise at Palmer's accusatory tone, his mind racing to piece together the puzzle of her sudden aggression. "I'm afraid I don't," he replied, his voice tinged with confusion. "Care to enlighten me?"
But before Palmer could respond, a sudden gust of wind swept through the street, sending both umbrellas flying out of their hands and soaring through the air with reckless abandon. With a startled cry, Palmer and Beckett chased after their wayward umbrellas, their feet slipping and sliding on the rain-soaked pavement as they struggled to regain control.
Just as Palmer reached out to grab her umbrella, she froze in horror as she realized what was about to happen—the explosive device was still primed and ready to detonate, and she had no way of stopping it.
With a deafening roar, the umbrella exploded in a burst of flames and debris, sending Palmer and Beckett sprawling to the ground in a heap of tangled limbs and drenched clothing. As the smoke cleared and the ringing in their ears subsided, they staggered to their feet, their faces flushed with embarrassment and disbelief.
"Well, that didn't go quite as planned," Beckett remarked dryly, his voice tinged with amusement as he surveyed the wreckage of their failed assassination attempt.
Palmer's cheeks burned with humiliation as she glared at Beckett, her pride wounded by their mutual embarrassment. "This is all your fault," she accused, her voice sharp with frustration. "If you hadn't—"
But Beckett held up a hand to silence her, a wry grin playing at the corners of his lips. "Let's not point fingers, Palmer," he interrupted, his tone teasing but not unkind. "We're both equally to blame for this little mishap."
With a sigh of resignation, Palmer nodded in reluctant agreement, her anger dissipating in the face of their shared humiliation. "I suppose you're right," she admitted, her voice tinged with chagrin. "But let's make one thing clear—we're not finished yet. This isn't over between us."
Beckett chuckled softly at Palmer's words, his eyes sparkling with mischief as he regarded her with a newfound sense of camaraderie. "I wouldn't have it any other way," he replied, his voice filled with a mixture of challenge and respect.
And as they stood there in the rain-soaked street, their clothes clinging to their bodies and their hair plastered to their heads, Palmer and Beckett shared a knowing glance—a silent acknowledgment of the bond that had formed between them, even in the midst of their bitter rivalry.Download Novelah App
