Chapter 19 Bridgekeeper Revealed

Xhen broke the surface of the water, gasping for air that tasted like victory and salt. The sun, a fiery orange ball sinking towards the horizon, cast long shadows across the beach. Exhaustion gnawed at him, but a surge of elation coursed through his veins. The Corrupter was vanquished, Aquapolis safe, and he was finally back on the surface.
"Xhen?"
A shaky voice pierced his haze of relief. He turned to see Maria sprinting towards him, her blonde hair windblown, her face etched with worry and a flicker of something he couldn't quite decipher.
"Maria!" Xhen cried, his voice hoarse. Her arrival felt like a dream, a stark contrast to the fantastical world he'd just left behind.
She reached him, skidding to a stop in the sand. For a moment, they simply stared at each other, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the salty air.
"You're alive," Maria breathed, her voice trembling. "I… I never thought I'd see you again."
Xhen reached out, hesitantly at first, and cupped her face in his hand. Relief and a wave of guilt washed over him. "I'm so sorry, Maria," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I should have told you… more."
Maria leaned into his touch, a tear tracing a path down her cheek. "There's… so much to tell me, isn't there?"
Xhen nodded, the weight of his secret threatening to overwhelm him. He couldn't keep hiding the truth from her any longer. But how could he possibly explain the bridge between worlds, the Aequor, and the terrifying power of the Corrupter?
"There's a whole world out there, Maria," he began, his voice barely a whisper. "A world beneath the waves, hidden from human eyes."
Maria's eyes widened, a mixture of fear and fascination flickering in their depths. "You… you're serious?"
He took a deep breath, the ocean breeze whipping through his hair. "Deadly serious. And I'm a part of it."
He braced himself for disbelief, for rejection. But instead, Maria surprised him.
"A part of it?" she echoed, her voice laced with wonder. "Like… a bridgekeeper? Like in the stories you used to tell me?"
Xhen's jaw dropped. "You… you remember those stories?"
Maria chuckled, a hint of her familiar spirit returning. "How could I forget? You said they were just myths, but your eyes always held a secret sparkle when you told them."
A wave of relief washed over him. Maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for him to share his world with her, not out of fear of exposure, but with the hope of understanding and acceptance.
"There's so much more to the stories, Maria," he said, his voice gaining strength. "And I want to tell you everything."
He pulled her close, the setting sun casting a warm glow around them. He knew explaining the fantastical truth wouldn't be easy, but with Maria by his side, facing the unknown together seemed less daunting. He had faced a world-eating monster; surely, he could face the challenge of honesty with the girl he loved.
As he began to weave a tale of underwater cities, ancient alliances, and the fight against a creature of pure darkness, Maria listened intently, her hand clasped tightly in his. The beach, once a familiar stretch of sand, now held a new significance – a potential bridge between their worlds, a place where the human and the extraordinary could finally intersect.
The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and purple. Xhen's voice trailed off, the weight of his confession heavy in the air between them. He scanned Maria's face, searching for any sign of disbelief or fear.
Instead, he found a flicker of excitement in her bright blue eyes. "Wow," she breathed, her voice trembling slightly. "That's… incredible. A hidden world beneath the waves, merfolk, a giant evil monster… it's like something out of a fantasy novel."
"Except it's real," Xhen said, his voice low. He braced himself for the "but" that never came.
"And you're a bridgekeeper," Maria continued, her gaze fixed on the distant waves. "You protect both worlds, the human and the merfolk."
A sliver of hope bloomed in Xhen's chest. "Yes," he said, his voice gaining strength. "And I almost lost it all. The Corrupter…"
"But you stopped it," Maria interjected, her eyes meeting his. "You used the Convergence, whatever that is, to defeat this monster. You're a hero, Xhen."
A blush crept up Xhen's neck. "It wasn't just me. Coral, Queen Anya…"
"But you were there," Maria interrupted again, a hint of determination in her voice. "You faced the darkness and survived. That takes courage."
Xhen stared at her, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He had expected fear, rejection, or maybe even ridicule. Instead, Maria's reaction was… acceptance. Not just acceptance, but a flicker of awe, a newfound respect for the secret life he led.
"So, what now?" Maria asked, breaking the comfortable silence.
He took a deep breath. "There's so much to learn, so much to rebuild. The merfolk and humans need to find a way to coexist peacefully, and I…" he hesitated, his gaze locking with hers. "I need to know if you…"
He trailed off, the words getting caught in his throat. Would she still want to be with him, knowing the truth about who he was and the fantastical world that claimed a part of him?
Maria reached out, her fingers tracing a path down his cheek. "You need someone who understands," she whispered, her voice filled with warmth. "Someone who believes you."
A relieved smile spread across Xhen's face. He pulled her into a tight embrace, the salty air and the rhythmic crash of the waves a welcome backdrop to the newfound understanding blossoming between them.
"I can't promise it will be easy," he said, his voice muffled against her hair. "There will be challenges, dangers…"
"I know," Maria replied, her voice firm. "But whatever comes next, we'll face it together."
She pulled back, a mischievous glint sparkling in her eyes. "Besides," she added with a playful smile, "I always knew you were hiding something. Now, tell me more about these merfolk. Do they have any cute mer-princes?"
Xhen laughed, the sound echoing across the beach. The future was uncertain, filled with potential dangers and unknown obstacles. But as he watched the first stars ignite in the twilight sky, he knew one thing for sure – he wouldn't face it alone. He had Maria by his side, a bridge between their worlds forged in trust, love, and a shared sense of wonder.
