Chapter 35 : Worry

Until the next day, I am still left dumbfounded on all the revelations and confessions subsequent to last night. I was walking past the halls, towards the dining area for breakfast when I saw my father emerging from somewhere.
"Oh, my dear. You seemed to be early for breakfast. And look at the bags underneath your eyes. Guess you haven't slept well."
I smiled at my father. Good thing he was able to cope up immediately from being captive of the baroness and Edward. He went through such torture, yet he is now as lively and as cheerful as before all of the threats happened.
"I am fine, father. I just cannot fathom on how Fergus is currently doing right now. He is still out there in the wild. Lost, perhaps, along the way. Although he has some men with him, all from his clan, it still cannot guarantee his safety."
I bowed my head down. Father went to me and hugged me tightly. "Everything will be alright my child. I should have been strong enough not to get swooned by the Baroness' threats and forced you to marry Edward, then none of these would have happened."
I removed myself from his embrace. "No father, it was never your fault in the first place. You were also forced by them! They are the ones solely responsible for everything that has happened. You only gave way because that is the only choice you had to save me."
Father was about to say something when we heard the clashing of the manor's gates. We looked at each other before walking hurriedly towards the commotion.
"Your highness, we need help!" A strange man suddenly jumped at me. Out of shock, I took a few steps back before I was pulled by him. He was holding both of my arms firmly while tears were cascading down his cheeks.
Some of the guards who were there immediately went to my rescue and separated me from the man. The man bowed down and knelt to the ground while looking at me. As I stared at his eyes, a sudden realisation hit me. He was one of the men who went together with Fergus when they chased Edward and the Baroness!
I ordered the guards to let him go and went near him. "What help are you in need of? Are there any injured people on your team? Why are you in such a hurry?" I almost lost my composure as my voice was rising.
Worry filled me once again with new feelings of fear. I am afraid of what they might say. I am about to forcefully tell the man to admit when his words stopped my world from rotating.
"Yes! L-laird Fergus. He is severely injured. We need help!" He then stood up and almost went ballistic when my guards stopped and held him tightly.
"Where is he?" I demanded while shaking his shoulders. Panic consumed me that I did not notice another commotion happening outside the manor's double doors.
"You highness, a couple of people went inside the gates. They were forceful, we tried stopping them but they were bringing a flat piece of wood with a wounded man lying on it," one of the guards reported to me.
"That's them!" The man I just interrogated shouted. "Please, your majesty, let them in. We need help to cure our Laird!" Without a second doubt and no words of confirmation from me, the guards ran outside and quickly assisted the people who were just forced to enter our premises a while ago. The palace guards knew how much importance Fergus holds now, as his status is equal to mine.
I moved closer to the doors to see the situation of my husband, yet what I saw will surely give me the fright of a lifetime.
Fergus' head is bleeding nonstop, with blood oozing from the other wounds of his body as well. He looked awfully tired and pitiful. He has cuts and bruises everywhere on his body. All of them were fresh. And the muscles on his face are twitching, indicating that although he is in an unconscious state, the injuries are extremely painful.
I did not notice that my father was watching everyone from a distance. The moment I felt his hand on my shoulders, tears quickly pooled and fell from my eyes. The tears were so intense that it kept falling down with no signs of stopping soon.
I covered my mouth with both of my arms to stop the sob coming out from me and leaned my head on my father's shoulders. It didn't take a minute for his attire to be soaked by my tears. Father hugged me tightly while whispering words of comfort.
"Hold on, my child. Your husband is strong. He will be fine, he must be fine." I nodded while listening to his words and poured all my tears out. I cannot afford to watch Fergus in that state without breaking down on my own.
As I was still crying, father did all the necessary things for Fergus. He told me to go to my room, which I did. The last thing I heard was that he was calling and ordering people around to call a doctor and prepare medicinal herbs. He is as worried as I am. Without Fergus, I don't think I'll be able to run Scotland as happily as the former king and queen did. Maybe the queen was right, I am in love with him but I cannot admit to it. Maybe, I am deeply worried because I value him so much.
I bowed my head down with all of these realisations while my tears are still falling in an endless state. I am hoping for the stars to agree with me and help Fergus. I hope he will be fine because I do not think that my worries will be at ease, not until I see him smile or walk again and be fine completely.
