Chapter 3 Welcome to Carbon Market, Sweet!

The aroma of sizzling garlic and grilling meat assaulted Sweet's senses the moment she stepped out of Lola's house. Yaya, her enthusiastic guide, grinned. "Welcome to Carbon Market, Sweet! Prepare to be overwhelmed."
Overwhelmed indeed. The bustling market stretched before them like a chaotic tapestry. Vendors hawked their wares - mountains of colorful fruits and vegetables piled high, baskets overflowing with fresh seafood, vibrant textiles shimmering in the morning sun. Sweet, overwhelmed but undeniably captivated, fumbled for her sketchbook.
Yaya wove through the throng, greeting vendors with friendly Tagalog and Bisaya chatter. Sweet, struggling to keep pace, found herself captivated by the sheer energy of the place. She sketched furiously, capturing the vibrant colors, the wrinkled faces of vendors, the playful banter between customers and sellers.
Suddenly, Yaya stopped in front of a stall piled high with unfamiliar delicacies. "This, Sweet," she announced, "is where the real adventure begins."
Sweet eyed the skewered meats and glistening eggplants with apprehension. "Adventure?" she squeaked.
Yaya's mischievous smile was answer enough. With a practiced hand, she selected an assortment of skewers - pork barbecue marinated in a sweet and savory sauce, fish balls bobbing in a mysterious orange broth, and something skewered with an unfamiliar purple vegetable.
Sweet took a tentative bite of the pork barbecue. Her eyes widened in delight. The smoky flavor, bursting with a tangy sweetness, was unlike anything she'd ever tasted. One bite turned into two, then three, and soon Sweet was happily devouring everything Yaya offered, oblivious to the curious stares she received.
Suddenly, a loud laugh interrupted her culinary exploration. "Looks like someone's enjoying the local flavors!"
Sweet turned to find Xhinjo, his smile as bright as the Cebu sun. He sported a worn surfboard under his arm, his hair looking windswept from a morning surf session.
A blush crept up Sweet's cheeks. "Hi," she mumbled, wiping a stray bit of sauce from her chin.
"Trying the local delicacies?" Xhinjo asked, his eyes twinkling.
Yaya nudged Sweet playfully. "Don't worry, Xhinjo. We've taken good care of her."
Xhinjo chuckled. "Speaking of taking care," he turned to Sweet, "I know a secluded cove perfect for swimming. Up for an adventure?"
Sweet glanced at Yaya, seeking her approval. Yaya winked. "Go, Sweet! We can handle the market without you... for now."
With a sense of thrill and a flutter in her stomach, Sweet agreed. The bustling market, the delicious (and slightly messy) street food, and now an unexpected adventure with a handsome stranger – Cebu was proving to be more exciting than she had ever imagined. Grabbing her sketchbook and a fresh sense of excitement, Sweet followed Xhinjo, leaving the chaotic energy of the market behind and venturing towards the promise of a hidden beach paradise.
The narrow alley they entered was a stark contrast to the market's frenetic energy. Sunlight dappled through the leaves of towering mango trees, casting cool shade on the dusty ground. Xhinjo, seemingly at ease navigating the labyrinthine path, kept glancing back at Sweet with a playful smile that sent shivers down her spine.
They walked in comfortable silence for a while, the rhythmic clack of Xhinjo's flip flops echoing on the path. Sweet stole glances at him, his broad shoulders and toned physique evident beneath his worn T-shirt. Suddenly, he stopped, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"Shh," he whispered, pointing towards a hidden break in the foliage. Sweet followed his gaze, her breath catching in her throat.
Beyond the gap, a breathtaking vista unfolded. Crystal-clear turquoise water lapped against a pristine white sand beach, fringed by lush coconut palms swaying gently in the breeze. A lone sailboat bobbed on the horizon, a picture of serenity in the vast expanse of blue.
This wasn't just any beach – it was a hidden gem, a secret haven untouched by the chaos of the outside world. Sweet felt a surge of excitement mixed with a tinge of apprehension. Xhinjo, sensing her reaction, offered her a reassuring smile.
"Welcome to my secret escape," he said, a touch of pride in his voice. "This is where I come to clear my head, catch some waves…" he trailed off, his eyes lingering on Sweet for a beat too long, "…or maybe share it with someone special."
Sweet's cheeks burned a vibrant red. Was this a blatant invitation? Her heart hammered against her ribs, a thrilling mix of nervousness and anticipation bubbling within her. Xhinjo stretched out a hand towards the secluded paradise.
"Ready to dive in?" he asked, his voice a husky murmur.
With a newfound confidence, fueled by the beauty of the hidden cove and the undeniable spark with Xhinjo, Sweet took his hand. Stepping through the foliage, she entered this secret world, eager to discover its wonders – and maybe, just maybe, explore the connection with the captivating boy beside her.
As they emerged from the foliage, the air shimmered with heat, the sun a relentless beacon overhead. The beach was even more stunning close-up. Powder-soft sand squished between Sweet's toes as she walked towards the impossibly blue water. But a tiny voice of doubt wormed its way into her head.
"Is this a good idea?" she whispered, glancing back at Xhinjo.
He stood a few steps behind, the sunlight glinting off the gold chain around his neck. A smile played on his lips, a smile that promised adventure but also something deeper, something Sweet couldn't quite decipher.
"This is a hidden paradise," he said, his voice low and melodic. "A place where worries melt away like ice cream on a hot day." He held up a finger, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Unless, of course, you're scared of a little adventure."
Sweet felt a competitive spark ignite within her. Scared? Not a chance. She straightened her shoulders, the forgotten sketchbook dangling from her hand. "Adventure is exactly what I came to Cebu for," she declared, her voice stronger than she expected.
Xhinjo's smile widened, revealing a glint of something akin to admiration. "Perfect," he said, a playful lilt to his voice. "Then let's get this party started."
Before Sweet could ask what exactly he meant, Xhinjo disappeared behind a large rock formation at the far end of the beach. Curiosity gnawed at her. What was he up to? Grabbing her sketchbook, she decided to explore, her apprehension replaced by a thrilling sense of anticipation. As she rounded the rock, a gasp escaped her lips.
There, nestled in the shade of a towering palm tree, was a small wooden shack. But it was what lay beside it that truly took her breath away. A brightly colored surfboard, its surface gleaming with a mesmerizing swirl of blue and green, rested against the palm trunk.
Suddenly, Xhinjo emerged from the shack, a mischievous grin plastered on his face. He wasn't wearing his board shorts anymore. Instead, he sported a pair of faded swim trunks that clung to his toned physique, leaving little to the imagination.
"Welcome to my little slice of heaven," he announced, gesturing towards the surfboard. "And this, my friend, is where the real adventure begins."
Sweet stared at him, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. A surfboard. Xhinjo, a surfer. This wasn't just a swim at a secluded beach. This was an invitation into Xhinjo's world, a world of sun, surf, and maybe, just maybe, something more. Would she take the plunge, both literally and figuratively, and see where the current took her? The answer, a thrilling mix of fear and excitement, bubbled within her. She clutched her sketchbook tighter, a determined glint in her eyes. "Alright," she said, her voice barely a whisper above the sound of the crashing waves. "Let's see what kind of adventure this surfboard has in store for us."
