Lucas looked at all the work on his desk and sighed. He picked up one of the files and tried to do justice to it, but found he could not concentrate. Thoughts of Emilia had him going like a nagging tooth. For days, he could not delete the picture of Captain wanting to kiss her out of his mental screen or fathom a way out of the mystery behind Kingskarl. He knew he could easily ask the Nelsons to take him to the club and they will gladly oblige him, but he wouldn't want them to know he was investigating her or give Emilia the impression that he was having her watched. Even as he lifted the phone, he was consciously aware that he was stirring up the hornet's nest. He knew third eyeing on Emilia could spell doom if it backfires but he was determined to risk the consequences. "Hello, you are on to Kingskarl," he heard a woman's voice say. "What can we do for you, please?" "Hello, I …I," he stammered. "I was thinking, I mean, can I get a temporary membership card for one night?" "Do you have the intention of becoming a member, sir?" "Well, yes, although that depends on if am impressed with what I see." "I'm sure you will be impressed, sir. No one has ever come here and left disappointed." "I wish I could share your enthusiasm," he laughed lightly. "So what do I do to become a member?" "It's simple, sir," she said cheerily. "Just get a member to introduce you and two others to guarantee you, and you're in." "What if I can't?" "I'm sorry, sir," she said in a flat tone. "There is nothing I can do about that." "Wait a minute, do you mean that there is no other way I can become a member except I find someone to guarantee me?" "Yes." She sounded arrogant. "Sir, this is an exclusive club. We are careful who we admit." "Well, thanks for your time," he said and hung up. Easing himself gently away from the big revolving easy chair, he sauntered over to the big French window that overlooked the city and stood looking out for a moment. People went about their daily business without worries. They all seemed happy, free and excited. Further down the streets, cars came in and go out through its numerous inlets and outlets. Sighing, he went back to his work and tried to concentrate, but he could not. He was still lost in thought when the intercom buzzed. "Yes," he said into the mouthpiece. "Sir, there's a man here who wouldn't give his name but prefers to talk to you personally," Karen, his personal secretary said. "He looks important and rich, should I send him up?" "Don't worry, Karen. Shoot him up and I'll see what's biting him?" Minutes later, Captain Onyerubi Jnr.; breezed in. His air of importance was overbearingly choking and could be seen written all over him. At first sight, you will know that he is a snub and probably educated at Oko Polytechnic. "What an efficient secretary you have here," he said the moment he came into his office, and without being invited, he sat down heavily. Obviously, he was so full of himself. "You're right, sir. Karen is very efficient.” "That I can see." "You're welcome to my humble office, sir," he said and stretched out his hand for a handshake, all the time wondering the reason for his unscheduled visit. Captain grabbed his hand and shook him hard. He nearly winced under the grip, but held on. "I was in the neighborhood and I decided to pay you a visit since you wouldn't call or visit." "No, no, no sir. Please, don't say that," he tried to defend himself. "I've been busy just lately. In fact, we planned coming around one of these days to pay you homage." "Well, that’s not why I am here.” He held his breath. Ever since he caught him with Emilia in a compromising condition, his respect for him has waned. He cleared his voice. “Look, the first moment I saw you, I knew you have what I need. You got talent and you are intelligent, but intelligence without money is nothing. Money is power." he paused. "It gives you the power to do anything. I'll be glad to show you the ropes. That is if you are ready and willing to play. Are you ready to play?" He shifted uncomfortably. "That depends on …on what you mean.” Captain looked around furtively. "Is it safe to talk here?" "Yes," he said hurriedly. "There is no problem, go ahead." "You see, you occupy an important position here. In fact, when I learnt that you head the international department, I knew you don't know the importance of your position." He suspected some foul play "What do you really want, sir?" "I have some money I'll like you to help me transfer to an account in the US. It should be between you and me only, okay? Of course, you will be adequately compensated. For every transfer made, you will collect ten percent. What do you say?" "But …but that is money laundering, Captain. I …I thought your company should have a domiciliary account, why don't you send it through that?" His eyes took a feral meanness. "Are you calling me a money launderer?" "No, Captain, not at all." "Then what?" "I…I ..," he stammered. "Well, good day to you. I thought you had some common sense." he stood up and stormed out of the office, leaving the door ajar. He was still starring after his disappearing figure when Karen walked in. "What an arrogant horror." "I don't blame him. If I run a multi-national company as big as the one he runs, I'll be prim, proper, classy and guess what?" "I can't, sir," Karen said laughing. "Arrogant."
