"Okay, enough! It wasn't intentional!" Without waiting for Jack's response, Emma interjected, her tone sounding dissatisfied.
Emma's defense of him right in front of me showed that she didn't regard me highly.
I glanced at Emma sideways, then coolly said to Jack, "Jack, thank you for driving my wife home, but it's getting dark, and the roads are slippery. It will be very dangerous if you don't head home soon."
If Jack had understood the implication, he would have realized that I was subtly urging him to leave.
But the reality showed that Jack was a shameless person!
Ignoring me, Jack laughed and said to Emma, "Emma, since we're already at your house, why don't you invite me in for a while?"
It was evident that he didn't care about my presence.
"Of course, you're welcome!" Emma replied without hesitation.
Hearing her response, I furrowed my brows.
Jack provocatively glanced at me and then sat inside his sports car, saying, "I'll drive you to find a parking spot."
Emma heard that and also got into the sports car.
The Lamborghini quickly disappeared in front of me.
I sneered at the two of them and continued walking forward. When I arrived at Emma's house, she and Jack were sitting in the living room chatting with each other.
Mrs. Brebeca brought fruits and drinks to offer him. I didn't care about them and went straight into my room.
Mrs. Brebeca, feeling dissatisfied, said to me, "You didn't even bother to greet the guests, how impolite!"
Jack smiled cheerfully and said, "Auntie, it's okay, he and I have already met before."
"Mr. Brown, you truly are knowledgeable and well-mannered, much more polite than him," flattered Mrs. Brebeca to Jack.
"I'm Emma's friend, you can call me Jack."
"Okay, Jack!" Mrs. Brebeca replied with a cheerful smile.
Jack turned to look at me and said, "Mr. Edwards, why don't you join our conversation?"
"Let him go back to his room, he has nothing in common to talk about with us," Emma chimed in.
"That's right, having him join our conversation will make everyone uncomfortable," immediately added Mrs. Brebeca.
Hearing Emma and Mrs. Brebeca badmouthing me like that, I didn't want to go to my room anymore.
Moreover, if I were to retreat to my room, it would appear as if I were showing cowardice. Furthermore, I also wanted to see what my mother-in-law and wife would say about me in front of Jack.
I walked over and sat on the left side of Jack. Mrs. Brebeca and Emma immediately showed discontent.
Jack cleared his throat and a deceitful smile appeared on his face as he said, "Mr. Edwards, which company are you currently working for?"
Mrs. Brebeca jumped in and continued, "He's unemployed, just idling around all day!"
That was the answer Jack wanted to hear. Jack continued asking, "So, Mr. Edwards, which state are you from? What do your parents do?"
"His parents are both bankrupt small business owners, he's just a poor country bumpkin!" Mrs. Brebeca replied instead of me.
"Then, Mr. Edwards, which university did you graduate from?"
"He only graduated from a non-prestigious college, how could someone useless like him study at a prestigious university?!"
Mrs. Brebeca was still angry because I didn't give her family heirloom to Mr. Kurt Thompson, so she wanted to humiliate me in front of Jack.
When Jack invited Emma out for dinner, he already knew that she was married to me and he also knew about my family's circumstances.
Now he was asking about my background just to highlight his superiority. Jack laughed and said, "So you went to university, I thought you only finished high school."
"He only attended a vocational college, how could he have the ability to go to university?" Mrs. Brebeca sneered at me.
But Emma, sitting next to me, furrowed her brows.
At this moment, I slowly opened my mouth and said, "Mother-in-law, if I attended a vocational college, then Emma also attended a vocational college. Don't forget that Emma and I went to the same university!"
Mrs. Brebeca immediately fell silent. She had focused on belittling me and had forgotten that Emma and I attended the same university.
Steal a chicken and lose a handful of rice!
Emma seemed a little embarrassed, she picked up a cup of tea and took a sip.
"Jack, I heard Emma say you're a graduate student at Caltech, is that right?" Mrs. Brebeca changed the subject.
"That's right!" Jack nodded and smiled.
A pleased expression appeared in his eyes.
"You're impressive! How long are you planning to stay abroad this time?"
"I won't be going abroad this time. My dad asked me to help him manage the family assets."
"That's right, the Brown family's business should be passed down to you now." Mrs. Brebeca looked around as if remembering something, and she said: "Oh, Jack, have you had a girlfriend during your years of studying abroad? Or maybe I should ask if you're married yet? You're handsome, and you're the heir of the Brownie conglomerate, so you must have a girlfriend!"
"No, actually, I'm still single," Jack replied.
